“That’s okay. I think you’ll end up getting divorced.”

Autumn quickly cut in when she saw Sierra’s expression getting darker. He really didn’t know how to read the room. And the former professor and Sierra were so close–why would they ever divorce? She’d been shipping them this whole time.
“Your family really just lets you do whatever you want? You’re that free?”
She tried awkwardly to change the subject.

She suddenly remembered what Maddox had said last time–that White’s family was massive. Even though he said things people didn’t want to hear, no one dared touch him, all because of his family.
If he really wasn’t valued by them, those people wouldn’t give him that kind of favor.
Realizing this, Sierra understood that White had probably only told part of the story. He wasn’t as simple- minded as he acted.

Then again, it made sense. Anyone who could run a successful investment business like his couldn’t possibly be some ordinary guy.
It was just that certain parts of his personality made people let their guard down.
You really couldn’t be fooled by appearances. Sierra silently reminded herself to stay alert.
After that, whenever White tried talking to her, Sierra barely responded. Eventually, White picked up on it and stopped trying.
Today was their last day at school. Starting tomorrow, they’d be on break. They were already among the latest to leave.
Professor Martin came to the lab and gave them a short speech, telling them to come back on the eighth day of the new year. That gave them over ten days off, which made everyone pretty happy.
Afterward, Professor Martin suggested they all go out for a meal together, sort of like a little celebration before the new year.
Sierra couldn’t exactly turn him down, so she sent Johnathan a message. Johnathan said he’d come pick her up in a bit.
White suddenly appeared out of nowhere and blurted out.
“You have to check in just to go out for dinner?”
His voice startled Sierra, and her expression darkened.
Seeing this, White quickly apologized.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. They were just saying they were about to leave, so I came to get you. I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop on your call!”
He apologized good–naturedly, and Sierra didn’t want to be harsh, so she just said.
“It’s not checking in. It’s respect. He’s my partner.”
After that, she didn’t wait for White’s reaction and went off with Autumn and the others.
White’s eyes darkened slightly, then he followed behind them.
Professor Martin had chosen a well–known restaurant. Luckily, he had enough clout to get them a table— places were fully booked this close to the new year.
“Usually no one drinks because we’re worried about affecting our experiments. But we don’t have anything tomorrow, so let’s raise a glass today. First, a big thank–you to White. Without his investment, this project wouldn’t even exist.”
Sierra knew her limits when it came to alcohol, so she asked for something with a very low alcohol
content.
Since everyone at the table knew each other, they decided to enjoy the moment. The mood was pretty pleasant.
