Chapter 40 – Heartless
MARCIA’S PERSPECTIVE
Kael led me to one of the empty meeting tents, far from the soldiers and the noise outside. The lanterns weren’t lit, but there was enough moonlight seeping through the flaps to see his face.
He looked like he hadn’t slept. Like Eunice’s defeat had weighed him down too.
I didn’t ask why he’d called me there. Just stared at him, waiting.
He didn’t waste time.
“Why did you hide your strength when you married me, Marcia?” he asked, a deep frown on his face. “The whole time,
had no you acted like a simple, traditional housewife. Like you strength, no power. You cared for my household like you had nothing better to do. Why?”
I looked at him, then looked away. “Does it matter now?”
He gave a bitter laugh, shaking his head. “You’re right. I probably don’t even have the right to ask. But I can’t help but wonder. It’s eating me up, keeping me awake at night. Back then, you could’ve chosen someone stronger. Smarter. Someone who… someone who actually deserved you. So why me?”

I stayed quiet.

Kael stepped closer, his voice lowering. “I never really knew you, Marcia. And now… it’s too late. I’m with Eunice now. She treats me well. I shouldn’t even be saying this…”
“Then don’t,” I said flatly.
He flinched at my tone, but I was done pretending.
“You want the truth?” I asked. “Fine. I married you because my mother begged me to. After my father and brothers died on the battlefield, she didn’t want to lose me too. She thought a quiet life would save me. That being someone’s wife would protect me from war.”
I paused.
“She was wrong.”
Kael frowned. “So it wasn’t because of me?”
“It had nothing to do with you.”
His mouth opened, but no words came out.
I crossed my arms. “You were just the man she chose. Someone safe. Someone she thought I could be happy with. I didn’t argue. I let her believe I’d be fine. But I never stopped thinking about the war. About the people who killed my family. I never forgot.”

Kael’s expression tightened. “I thought you came here to take revenge from us. From Eunice, for stealing me from you.”
“I don’t care about Eunice, Kael. Or you,” I said. “It was never about either of you. I came back because I couldn’t sit still any longer. Someone had to finish what my family started.”
His eyes darkened. “So tell me then—did you marry me because you loved me, or just to obey your mother?”
I tilted my head slightly. “That question means nothing now.”
He stared at me, like he was waiting for something. An answer that might give him peace.
But I had nothing left to give him.
“Whatever you were hoping to hear, forget it.” I said. “We’re strangers now. And strangers should know their place.”
His cheeks flushed. Not from embarrassment—from shame.
“So that’s it,” he said, voice rising. “You never loved me. The moment I married a second Luna, you threw everything away. You were the one who wanted a divorce, not me!”
I raised an eyebrow, “And you expect me to stay after that? You promised me I’d be your only Luna. That we’d build something together. That I should wait for you to return, and you would

“You talk like you were perfect,” he snapped. “But everyone blames me now. Everyone looks at me like I ruined everything. You left me, you were the heartless one, and yet I’m the one who’s hated.”
I almost laughed. Not because it was funny—because it was unbelievable.
“Love or not—I did everything a wife should, and more,” I said, voice cold. “I helped your pack. I supported your mother. I kept our alliance strong. Even in your absence, I ensured that your pack thrived. You were the one who turned away first.”
Kael’s mouth opened, but I didn’t let him speak.
“Tell me, Kael. Can you say the same? Can you say you treated me—or my mother—the way you should’ve?”
He didn’t answer.
I watched him struggle for words, but none came.
I turned to leave.
That was enough for one night.

But before I could approach the flap of the tent, Eunice stormed inside.
“Eun,” Kael whispered, shocked.
She stood frozen at the entrance, eyes darting between the two
of us.
“What are you two doing here?” she asked sharply.
