Camille narrowed her eyes as she stared at me. Her eyes were brimming with visible displeasure.
I cast my gaze into the distance and said nonchalantly, “What if some important figure unknowingly ate a dessert that had been switched? Would they blame the Layton family for the poor hospitality?
“If you stepped on their toes because of this, and Mr. Layton takes it out on you, the consequences wouldn’t be worth it.”
My words sent Camille quivering with rage, and fury flashed in her eyes. “How dare you talk to me this way?”
I shook my head. “I’m just giving you a piece of advice. It’s up to you if you want me to take the desserts back.”
Camille was stumped. Her expression was grim as she stared at me and shouted, “Fine. I’ll make you regret it, you muttface!”
With that, she shot to her feet and left in a huff.
It was 6:30 pm now. Half an hour more, and no one in this place would own me anymore. As for Camille, she had better steer clear of me in the future.
At that moment, the lights in the party hall suddenly went dark. The spiral stairs were bathed in a beam of light, and out came Camille, wearing a hand–tailored dress that was worth hundreds of thousands.
She lifted the hem of her dress as she gracefully descended the stairs. Her makeup was flawless, and her hair was tied up elegantly.
Camille’s lips curled into a gentle smile. She actually carried the sophistication of an heiress of a wealthy family when she wasn’t throwing tantrums. But I knew that she was rotten to the core, despite her appearance.
In the party hall, countless rich young men applauded and cheered at her entrance. Kieran gawked at Camille and was practically drooling over her. He looked just like a dog in heat. Utterly disgusting.
“Absolutely gorgeous! Camille, we don’t deserve you!” The people around me joined the cheering as well.
Camille savored moments like these. She acted like some elegant heiress and curtsied at
everyone.
“Welcome to my birthday party, everyone. I am honored to have all of you here.” Then, she gently extended a hand. “You may start presenting your gifts now. Show me just how sincere
you all are.”
Countless rich young men below the stage pushed each other out of the way. They presented her with valuable gifts like diamond–encrusted jewelry. Soon, the gifts piled up next to Camille’s feet.
That was when Camille looked up and swept her eyes across the room. It didn’t take her long to lock onto me. Then, she pointed a finger at me like a proud lioness.
“Max, get the hell over here.”
Everyone in the party hall immediately fell silent and looked my way in unison. I calmly returned her gaze and slowly rose to my feet.
Camille reveled in humiliating me. It was especially true when she did it in front of this many people. The crowd made torturing me all the more enticing for her.
My time wasn’t up yet. I had no choice
but to obey her whim and fancy. Throughout the past years, Camille has humiliated me in public countless times. I had long grown numb to it.
“Move your butt. What are you dilly–dallying for? Aren’t you aware that my time is precious?” She urged me softly. Her tone was filled with displeasure.
Picking up my pace, I walked over and said courteously, “Ms. Layton, what can I do for you?”
Camille stood on the stage and looked at me condescendingly. Her tone was cutting and oozing irritation. “Where is my gift?”
“What gift?” I asked, feigning ignorance.
Displeasure flashed in her eyes. “I’m talking about my birthday present, of course!”
I grinned and said, “Ms. Layton, you have enough gifts, as it is. You don’t need mine at all.”
“What? Didn’t you prepare a gift for me?” Camille asked, annoyed. “Didn’t you buy me a diamond necklace? What’s the matter? Are you afraid that your cheap gift won’t hold a candle to the presents the others brought tonight?”
I maintained a calm expression as I looked at her. Sneering, I said, “Ms. Layton, gifts are supposed to come from the heart, and yet you are forcing your subordinate to buy you a gift. Don’t you think that’s a little inappropriate?
“Also, I didn’t buy that necklace for you. Please don’t flatter yourself.”
As expected, Camille’s expression changed when she heard what I said. Her face turned red as she pointed at me and roared furiously, “Max, what makes you think you’re worthy enough to be my subordinate?
“You’re just a lapdog to the Layton family, and your purpose is to be at my beck and call. If I ask you to get something done, you will do so without any questions!
Chapter 44
“You are permitted to stand here and talk to me because I’m merciful and benevolent. Today’s my birthday. Everyone valued me and showered the with so many expensive gifts.
“And yet you bought me a diamond necklace that’s worth a little over ten thousand dollars as my birthday gift. What makes you think it’s okay to give that piece of garbage as a gift?
“I did you a favor when I asked you for it, and you have the audacity to insult me.” Camille, hysterical as she was, pointed at me and snarled, Say something!”
I raised my hand calmly and checked the time. “Three.”
“Three?” She frowned and stared at me. Then, she hesitantly asked, “What are you talking about?”
“Two.” I didn’t respond to Camille. Instead, I focused on my watch.
“One.” The second hand paused precisely at 7:00 pm.
I looked up at Camille. “Ms. Layton, my three–year contract is up. I’m free once more. Goodbye!”
