Chapter 10
‘Are you really… going to get a divorce?” Wendy looked up at Yves, her pale lips trembling slightly, though a flicker of joy danced in her eyes. She threw herself into his arms. “I thought… I’d never get the chance to be with you again in this lifetime.”
Yves froze for a second before wrapping his arms around her thin shoulders. He was well aware that he liked Wendy and wanted to marry her, but there was an inexplicable, dull ache in
his chest.
He massaged his temple, assuming it was because he hadn’t gotten a wink of sleep all night. That had to be why his emotions felt so out of control.
“Get some rest,” he murmured and gently patted Wendy’s back. “Once you’re feeling better, we’ll get married.”
As soon as the doctor walked in, Daphne asked, “How’s my daughter?”
“Don’t worry. Physically, there’s nothing wrong with the patient. She mainly fainted due to shock,” the doctor said, taking off his stethoscope. “We’ll keep her overnight for observation, and if all looks good tomorrow, she’ll be discharged.”
After hearing that, Bryant, who had been sitting stiffly nearby, let out a sigh and relaxed right
away.
Wendy tugged on Yves‘ sleeve and sweetly said, “Yves, I’m a little hungry. I want those crepes from the shop around the corner.”
“Alright, give me a minute. I’ll go get them now,” Yves said without a moment’s hesitation.
However, when he turned around, he bumped into his bodyguard. It was the same bodyguard who had saved Zoey by the cliff. Even now, his hands were still stained with blood.
“Where’s Zoey? Why isn’t she here?” Yves inquired.
The bodyguard looked puzzled. After all, Yves had never cared about Zoey’s whereabouts
before.
“Mr. Pearce, Mrs. Pearce didn’t come to the hospital with us,” the bodyguard quietly answered. “But she did ask me to give you a gift. It’s in your car. She said it was for your birthday…
“Would you like to see it?”
Yves stopped in his tracks. He remembered she had mentioned preparing a gift for him, but that was nothing new. She had been doing that for years, though he had never really cared about them.

Just then, Zoey’s text from last night popped into his head, and an inexplicable restlessness bubbled up inside him. “No. Leave it there,” he said apathetically. “It’s probably something unimportant. I don’t feel like dealing with it right now.”
He was about to leave when his bodyguard added, “Mrs. Pearce said you have to personally open it.”
Yves sneered. They were about to divorce, yet she was still playing these little games?
He pulled out his phone, glanced at the time, and walked straight to the elevator. “Tell her I’m not interested. Also, ask her not to gift me anything else. I don’t like her gifts, and I usually end up throwing them away.”
As the elevator doors slid shut, an image of Zoey flashed in his mind.
He remembered how she often nagged about his weak stomach, yet he’d always make himself a strong cup of coffee every time he stayed up late working.
Even though she was afraid of heights, she had eagerly gone hiking with him. He’d casually mentioned craving beef stew last week, and she had made some and set it on the table the very next day.
“Sir? What kind of crepes would you like?” the vendor asked, snapping him out of his thoughts.

It had only been a short marriage, and Zoey’s little acts of kindness didn’t mean anything. There was no point in holding onto them. He didn’t love her anyway.
When Yves returned to the hospital, Wendy was overjoyed. “You really are the best, Yves!”
Yves smiled and handed her the crepes, but he still couldn’t stop thinking about where Zoey
was.
Just then, his phone lit up.
He hurriedly checked it, only to find it wasn’t a message from Zoey.
For some reason, that left him inexplicably disappointed.
