Chapter 16
With Mabel’s guidance, Naomi made her way out of the mountains. The moment she returned to the city, she contacted the relevant local authorities.
She was determined to build a road connecting the village to the city. She planned to install internet access so the elders and children could receive information from beyond the mountains. Moreover, she intended to build a school and a clinic to improve their quality of
life.
Naomi aimed to turn the village into a travel destination, creating local jobs and encouraging former residents to return and stay with their families.
It was a massive project. Naomi invested over a hundred million and personally led a team back to the village to begin construction.
“Sweetheart, why are you back again? Life’s too hard here. You’re not used to this kind of place.” Mabel’s eyes turned red as she saw her.
“It’ll get better. Things will be much easier, I promise.” Naomi hugged her tightly.
The village elders and children didn’t fully understand development, but they trusted Naomi. They knew she wouldn’t harm them.
Those who were able to help came forward willingly. No matter how much Naomi tried to persuade them to rest, they insisted on contributing in any way they could.
Naomi brought in a professional medical team to give health checkups to the elderly and children. She even personally began teaching the kids, introducing them to reading and learning.
For the first time, she felt a true sense of purpose in her life. As it turned out, a world without Cassian could be just as rich and meaningful.
That day, Naomi was teaching the children how to solve word problems when Mabel walked in with someone beside her. She smiled. “Sweetheart, someone’s here to see you.”
Naomi’s heart skipped a beat. Her first thought was that Cassian had found her. A wave of irritation rose inside her.
She liked her life now. She didn’t want any more entanglements with Cassian. She looked toward the door with a frown. Then, she was stunned.
Mabel gently nudged the man forward. “I’ve already checked him out for you. He’s not a bad person.”
“Thank you for the compliment. I’ll do my best to stay that way.”
It was Roy. He was dressed in a black tracksuit, standing in the doorway with the sunlight behind him. The warmth in his smile mirrored the light streaming in around him.
Naomi stood up, staring at him in surprise. “Roy? What are you doing here?”
“I came to find you,” he replied simply.
“To find me?” Naomi blinked, attempting to recall if there were any unresolved contracts
between them.
Ever since her parents passed away, Naomi had hired a professional manager to run the company, and Roy was no longer the legal advisor for the Whitaker Group. She had only entrusted him with handling the property matters related to Cassian, and she had already paid
him in full for his services.
After getting together with Cassian, she had almost no social life of her own. She and Roy weren’t exactly friends. She genuinely couldn’t think of a single reason why he would come looking for her.
“Naomi, do you really not remember me? Five years ago, you were in that car accident because you were trying to save me.” As Roy spoke, a flicker of pain passed through his eyes.
The one who should’ve been hit that day was him. His half-brother had hired someone to kill him. Just as the car was about to strike, Naomi pulled him out of the way.
The attacker was furious that she had interfered and ran her down instead.
If she hadn’t saved him, there never would have been the accident. Reina wouldn’t have appeared. So, Naomi wouldn’t have had to endure everything that followed.
