Chase knew his son looked down on him. Over the years, he’d come to despise himself too.
His family was broken, and he couldn’t even protect the woman he loved.
Still, some things needed to be said.
“Johnathan, you’ve never met Victor. He’s a complete maniac. If he ever finds out the truth about the past, he won’t let it go. Please, Johnathan–just let it end here. Don’t reach out to Victor’s family.”
Johnathan responded flatly.
“So she died for nothing, is that it?”
He stared at Chase with icy contempt.
“I always knew you were selfish. I just didn’t realize you could be this selfish. You think marrying her was protecting her? No. You just wanted her as your cover. In the end, it was still about you. Meeting you was the worst thing that ever happened to her.”
Chase hadn’t expected such venom. His face turned ghostly pale.
Johnathan’s words cut deep – he gave Chase no dignity at all.
“You all keep saying she was your best friend. But what did you do for her? From start to finish, all I’ve heard is how much she did for you. And all you did was bleed her dry.”
Thinking of that gentle, soft–spoken woman, Johnathan’s chest tightened like it had been stabbed.
She was so foolish.
None of this had anything to do with her. If she’d never met Chase or Susie, she could have lived a wonderful life.
She had a loving father and brother, and even a fiancé. But in the end, she lost everything.
Her fiancé died. Her child didn’t make it. And even then, she was still thinking of saving her friends from misery.
Johnathan stood up, coldly looking down at Chase.
“You’re afraid. I’m not. Someone has to do something for her.”
If he’d never known the truth, maybe he could’ve left it alone. But now that he did could pretend nothing had happened.
She raised him for ten years. He owed her that much. He owed her more.
“You all can run. Get far away.
Johnathan sneered. “You might live longer that way.”

Chase flushed with humiliation, stung by every word. He couldn’t hold back.

Without waiting for a reply, he turned and left in a hurry – afraid to hear anything worse.
Susie had been waiting downstairs the whole time. She didn’t know how to face Johnathan. When she saw Chase coming out, she rushed to him.
“Well? Did you talk to Johnathan? Did he agree?”
Chase shook his head. “We’ll talk at home.”
Once they were back, Chase explained everything that had happened.
Susie was deathly pale. Chase knew she was afraid and tried to comfort her.
“Don’t be scared. This time, I’ll protect you.”
It took a while before Susie finally shook her head,
“No… I was thinking about what Johnathan said. He’s right. We were too selfish. Wendy ended up like that, and we never took revenge for her. We betrayed her. Even Johnathan understands that. And yet we’ve been living comfortably all these years.”
She grabbed Chase’s hand tightly.
“This time, we fight for Wendy.”
Chase nodded, about to respond – but a voice interrupted.
“Dad, was what you just said true?”
It was Jose.
He hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, but their voices had been loud, and they hadn’t closed the door. He couldn’t have missed it even if he wanted to.
His head buzzed. He’d already known Johnathan was his biological brother, but he hadn’t expected the story behind it to be so heavy.
