“We need to prepare for both possibilities. We can’t afford to let our guard down on either front.”
Sierra nodded quickly. “Especially you. You need to take more people with you.”
She was fine at the university – she had her own lab.
“Your project hasn’t officially started yet,” Johnathan said. “The main house has everything – top–of–the- line equipment and labs. Move your experiment there.”
He made the decision immediately.
Sierra didn’t mind. She could run her experiment anywhere. What worried her was how to explain it to White.
“What should we tell White? Won’t that tip him off?”
“You can say the Wynn family has run into some trouble, and for safety reasons, I want you working from home. The main house doesn’t allow outsiders in and out freely, so the two of you will have to switch to remote communication.”
Johnathan had already thought through his phrasing.
Sierra agreed that it sounded reasonable. She couldn’t help but remark, “If White really is behind this, he’s probably regretting it now.”
“I’m not taking any chances.”
As Johnathan spoke, he gripped Sierra’s hand tightly.
Sierra looked back at him. “Same to you. Please, take care of yourself.”
She had nearly lost Johnathan once. No one understood that feeling better than she did.
Because of that, she fully supported all of Johnathan’s decisions.
The next day, Sierra called White and told him she wouldn’t be working at the university lab for the foreseeable future.
As expected, White was stunned.
“Why? Is it Johnathan again?”
“He can’t keep controlling you like this – you’re your own person.”
“It’s not him,” Sierra replied. “Something’s happened with the family. Someone’s targeting us. For safety reasons, I’ll be working from home at the old estate for a while?
“Don’t worry about the project – I’ll keep working hard from here. We can still communicate online.”
Sierra’s explanation left White without a good excuse to argue. To avoid raising suspicion, he reluctantly agreed, though he still made several attempts to suggest working together. He even offered to visit the

But Sierra gently refused, repeating that the estate wasn’t convenient for outsiders to enter.
White had no choice but to agree.
As soon as the call ended, he slammed his phone down and cursed.
If he’d known this would happen, he wouldn’t have made any moves so soon.
Johnathan was watching Sierra like a hawk. How was he supposed to make a move now?
His original plan had been to get to Sierra in the lab spike a drink with a sedative, and she’d lose consciousness for a few hours.
By the time she woke up, it would all be done.
Implanting the chip would take just two hours. After that, he could manipulate her emotions at will.
But now that Sierra wasn’t going to the lab, he had to rewrite the whole plan.
While White was busy crafting a new strategy, Sierra was reviewing her earlier conversation with him.
As she suspected, something about White wasn’t right. He’d clearly shown signs of agitation when she said she wouldn’t be going to the lab.
And someone as clever as White had to know there was no way he’d be allowed into the Wynn family’s

He must not have expected her to react this way.
His goal was clearly to be alone with her.
But what exactly was he planning?
That night, Sierra went to the lab, and Johnathan didn’t return until late. He reeked of alcohol. Sierra had wanted to talk to him about White, but when she saw him like that, she immediately put everything else aside and brought him some honey water.
“How much did you drink?”
“Not much.”
Though he smelled strongly of alcohol, Johnathan was perfectly lucid.
“Why are you still up?” he asked.
“Waiting for you.”
Sierra hadn’t planned to bring up White right away, but Johnathan could tell something was on her mind.
“You wanted to talk?”

“It can wait until tomorrow. It’s not urgent.”
She could see the exhaustion on his face.
“It’s fine. I won’t be able to sleep anyway. I want to hear it.”
Johnathan sat down beside her and rested his head on her lap.

As Sierra gently massaged his head, she played the recording of her conversation with White from earlier that day.
“He’s definitely up to something.”
Even with alcohol in his system, Johnathan’s judgment was razor–sharp. He immediately picked up on White’s unease.
“Exactly,” Sierra agreed. “I felt like he was trying really hard to see me, but I don’t know why.”
She voiced her biggest concern.
“It makes sense if he wanted to meet me at the lab. But what’s puzzling is that he kept trying to follow me to the estate. That’s unrealistic – and he knows it. So what makes him think he could pull something off here and still walk away clean? What is he relying on?”
It was the question that had haunted Sierra all day.
