As Quinn walked over, her eyes held a cold look in them. She said, “Mr. Zenn, Max is a friend of mine. I was the one who brought him in here. Are you trying to humiliate me?”
Desmond frowned, clearly not expecting the turn of events. “So you’re the one who brought him in. This explains why he was acting so bravely.”
Then, he turned to look at me and added, “Max, don’t tell me that you’re planning to ask Quinn to put in a good word for you, hoping I’d give you the project. I always knew that you liked to leech off of women, but I never thought that you’d be such a big leech.”
Desmond was smart, and his words were just a means to stop Quinn from putting in a good
word for me.
Before I could reply, Quinn smiled and said, “Mr. Zenn, you seemed to have misunderstood the events. I only brought him inside the banquet hall.
“I have nothing to do with the business deals and collaborations he has planned. Mr. Zenn, you wouldn’t humiliate me over something so trivial, would you?”
Desmond scoffed and replied, “Of course I wouldn’t. I respect you.”
Although Desmond had already agreed, he still continued, “However, the result of this collaboration has been decided. Centrise Group will work with the Laytons. No one can change
that!”
At that moment, Benson walked over. He said, “Max, I’m so glad to see you here.”
Despite being the one who had refused to invite me, Benson still smiled at me in greeting when he saw me. He sure was a seasoned fox.
“Mr. Layton, I hate to say this to you, but I might do something to upset you later on. You won’t hold it against me, would you?” I asked, my smile polite.
Since we were all putting on an act, we might as well keep pretending.
Although Benson kept saying that he didn’t mind me leaving the Laytons, that wasn’t how he really felt. I knew that because he would not have pulled so many little stunts if that were the
case!
“Max, what are you saying? You fucking-” Camille immediately cursed furiously.
However, Benson interrupted her and said, “You should mind your manners. We’re event now, so you had better watch your language!”
formal
With that said, Benson turned to me and chuckled. “Max, what are you saying? Why would I hold anything against you? Since we’re at such a formal event, I won’t be mad as long as you don’t cause too big of a scene today.”
Chapter 80
Benson’s expression remained indifferent, but there was a hidden implication behind his
words.
“Mr. Layton, I definitely won’t cause too big of a scene. But if something does happen, I hope you’d hold Camille back. After all, she tends to lash out easily, don’t you agree?”
My words were far more direct than his.
Benson’s expression finally fell, while Camille became furious. She pointed her finger at me in anger, but Benson quickly returned to his senses and stopped her.
With a chuckle, he said, “She’s still young after all.”
Then, he patted my shoulders and sald solemnly, “I know you’re angry, but the business
actions. industry is like a warzone. I hope you can understand my
“Max, I’d also like to tell you one more thing. If you’re willing, you can always return to the Layton family. We’ll always welcome you!”
It seemed that Benson had not given up on the idea of bringing me back. It was a shame that I would never return to the Layton family in my lifetime.
Wait, I shouldn’t say such things.
If Benson were adamant about fighting with me till the very end, then I would return one day. However, that day would only come when the Layton family business is in my hands!
“Mr. Layton, I’d also like to say one more thing. I won’t go back, but as you’ve said, the business industry is like a war zone.
“However, I still think that it would be best if we leave some grace for each other. Otherwise, if things get ugly, it would be bad for everyone. Wouldn’t you agree?”
Although my voice was light, the threat behind my words was not!
Benson looked at me deeply before he smiled. “Alright. I understand what you’re trying to say.
I know you’re here for that project, but you should just give up. No one will be able to take the project away from us.”
“That might not necessarily be the case,” I replied flatly.
