“I had my own kids to raise. You dumped
those kids, so I sent them to foster care.”
Tiffany pointed at me, her face red, but she
couldn’t say anything.
Michael and Tiffany were stuck.
く
They had to take the boys out of there with
everyone watching.
After Michael left.
The party fell apart.
My in–laws were crying their eyes out, unable
to believe that the two grandchildren weren’t
Michael and Tiffany’s.
The week before the party, I went to see
Michael’s parents.
I overheard them planning to embarrass me,
to have the reunion on my birthday.
I had a feeling what they were up to.
<
So I brought Jayden and Jason.
They wanted a family reunion, so I made it
happen.
After all those years, I had to take back all the
crap I put up with from the Songs.
After I sold the house, I bought another one.
I made sure it was across the street from
Tiffany’s.
Talking to my neighbors, I learned that Tiffany
and Michael had lived there for 18 years.
They were known as the perfect couple.
Now, they were enemies.
The walls were thin, and I could hear them
arguing.
“Michael! If it wasn’t for your stupid idea, we
wouldn’t be in this mess!”
“How are we going to live now that you had
two freaks?”
“It’s your fault! Why are you blaming me?”
“I’m not the one who caused this! Why is the
twins so smart?”
“These two are useless! They aren’t worth my
time!”
Chapter 6

- 6.
I heard a belt crack.
Jason was getting beat again.
He wasn’t bright and always messed things
- up.
I always heard them hitting him.
One day, I ran into Jayden in the complex.
He was pushing the wheelchair to the store,
his face bruised.
The parking lot had a long slope, and he was
struggling to push the chair up.
He wasn’t strong enough, and it kept sliding
He wasn’t strong enougn, and it kept siiding
back.
I grabbed the handles and pushed.
Jayden looked back and saw me.
“Thanks.”
“Do you want me to call the cops?”
“It won’t do anything. They’ll just hit me
harder.”
Jayden narrowed his eyes, full of anger.
“Sometimes the internet works better than
the police.”
I said.
く
Jayden stopped, and his eyes cleared.
He was smart and caught on quick.
I was friendly with Michael’s cousin.
She asked me to lunch.
“You won’t believe this.”
“Michael asked his parents for money
because he has extra mouths to feed.”
I took a bite of food and waited.
“Guess what? They yelled at him and said
Tiffany’s got bad genes and that’s why she
had those kids. They said they’re going to set
him up.”
く
I asked, “Michael’s married, right?”
“Michael wants to dump those cripples and
divorce her.”
“Who are they setting him up with?”
She leaned in.
“His parents‘ cousin’s daughter. She does
housekeeping. She’s going to be Michael’s
maid.”
“She’s gonna be a baby mama.”
“Michael’s parents said that if she had a son,
they’d divorce Tiffany.”
My cousin laughed.
く
“What a mess.”
I laughed too because Michael wasn’t going
to have any peace.
I wasn’t expecting the maid to show up so
soon.
Three days later, I saw a young woman going
into Tiffany’s place.
Tiffany wasn’t happy.
But she couldn’t say anything when she
learned Michael’s mom hired her.
Michael started acting nasty to Tiffany as
soon as the maid arrived.
“You stay at home all day. Why don’t you get
く
“What do you want from me? I ruined my life
for you, and now you’re treating me like
trash?” Tiffany shouted.
“Stop talking about the kids. You’re the one
who messed up and had those losers!”
“I hate you! Jerk!”
