Because he was the professor’s son, Selene decided to give him a call.
In the conference room, Adrian lounged back in his chair, exuding an air of careless confidence. His features were striking–deep–set eyes, a strong nose, and a
wickedly handsome smile that left a dimple in his cheek. He looked every bit the bad boy, trouble and charm rolled into one.
“I just found out Attorney Channing is so determined, he must’ve written this report with his feet.”
He picked up the report, flipping through the pages with mock seriousness. “If you tossed this into a field, the farmers would be thrilled. ‘Look at this! Top–notch fertilizer!“”
Across the table, Attorney Channing flushed so red he seemed ready to bury his face in his chest.
Adrian’s attention shifted to the junior associate seated beside Channing. “Nice job organizing these files. You’re as thorough as my grandma tucking herself in at night–you nearly had me laughing out loud.”
The junior associate looked like she was on the verge of tears.
Adrian offered a mock reassurance, “Hurry up and finish the rest, so you’ll have the pleasure of reorganizing everything all over again.”
Just then, his phone buzzed. Adrian barely glanced at the screen–a string of unfamiliar digits. He dismissed it at first, but a few seconds later, something about the number tugged at his memory.
Then it hit him. He knew that number by heart. He’d never saved it, only to avoid bringing unnecessary trouble to the other person.
Adrian grabbed his phone, and as he pressed answer, he drew a deep breath.
Across from him, the other attorneys noticed his sudden seriousness and tensed up as well.
“Hello? Who’s this?”
His low, velvety baritone carried through the line and into Selene’s ear.
The lawyers sitting across from Adrian, who had just been cowering like scolded

schoolchildren, listened in shock. Was this the same man who’d just torn into them? Who was he on the phone with, using that voice?
Had Attorney Shaw been possessed? And who was lucky enough to be on the receiving end of that dangerous charm?
“Mr. Shaw? This is Selene. Sorry to bother you,” she said.
A genuine smile touched Adrian’s lips, his voice almost vibrating through the phone. “Miss Thompson, have you finally decided you want me to take your case?”
“I’ve already signed the divorce agreement with Harrison.”
Adrian’s lips curled in satisfaction.
Selene got straight to the point. “I was hoping you could recommend a reliable investment manager. Do you happen to know someone?”
“Of course,” Adrian replied smoothly. “I’ll have a client manager from Quantum Horizon Capital call you this afternoon.”
“Thank you so much,” Selene said, polite as ever.
Adrian feigned nonchalance. “My dad’s been seriously ill lately. Just the other night, I heard him mumbling your name in his sleep.”
Selene’s heart tightened. “I’ll visit Professor Shaw tomorrow, if he’s up for it?”
“I’ll check.” Adrian picked up his iPad and, in full view of the other lawyers, began canceling several meetings scheduled for the next day.
A moment later, his voice returned, “Turns out I’m free tomorrow. Give me a call before you head to the house.”
“Alright.”
Selene’s voice was warm and clear, and Adrian’s smile stretched almost to his ear.
After hanging up, Adrian tilted his head and saved her number in his phone, adding the note: “Sweet Moon.”
