Cyril secretly arranged for people to partner with Freda, giving her five percent of the company’s annual profits to fund her projects.
Since he didn’t dare bother Freda anymore, this was his way of protecting her from the shadows.
When the shareholders found out about this, they came to make trouble again.
Cyril threw the betting agreement in their faces, shutting them up.
He’d signed an indefinite contract with Freda–as long as she continued developing mountain villages, his company would keep sending the money.
Every day, Cyril received updates about Freda and videos of her. She was becoming more and more confident, more and more radiant.
Freda was his reason for living, the light that kept his heart beating.
One late night, Cyril got up from his office desk and suddenly everything went black as he collapsed to the floor.
When he woke up, he saw his mother’s tear–streaked face.
The multiple head injuries Cyril had sustained had caused blood clots in his brain that were pressing on his nerves. Due to their location, they couldn’t be removed.
He could go blind or lose consciousness at any time, and might even die.
When Cyril learned this news, his first thought was fear that he wouldn’t be able to protect Freda anymore.
“Thank God I signed that contract. At least I’m part of her future somehow.”
“Mom, I’m so sorry. I woke up way too late–I didn’t just hurt Freda, I broke your heart too. If I don’t make it, please
watch over Freda for me.”
“If I could do it all over again, I swear I wouldn’t be such a bastard.”
Cyril fell into a coma, with no telling when he might wake up.
Crying her eyes out, his mother went to find Freda and begged her to visit Cyril.
Freda had just thrown away the flowers Cyril had sent. She was wearing a crisp white business suit and was slightly
startled when she saw his mother.
Cyril’s mother had always been good to her. She smiled and walked over. “Mrs. Prescott, what brings you here?”
“Freda, my son is unconscious. The doctors say he could die at any moment. Please, I’m begging you–will you go see him?” His mother sobbed uncontrollably. “I know I shouldn’t bother you, but I…”

Freda’s expression changed slightly as she supported the older woman. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Prescott, but I can’t go
“I don’t want any more connections with him. I know you’ll blame me for this. I’m sorry” Freda took a deep break
“You have no idea–you’re never gonna be completely done with him. He’s been giving you…” Wh mother wanted t say something but stopped, remembering Cyril’s previous instructions, and swallowed the rest of her words,
Cyril was afraid that if Freda knew the truth about their business partnership, she’d cancel the contract unilaterally,
It was the only connection left between them.
Freda didn’t understand what she meant. She bowed to his mother. “He and I have nothing to do with each other
anymore. I’m sorry.”
Freda left without hesitation. His mother covered her mouth and cried but didn’t chase after her.
As Freda walked out of the office building, Edric got out of his car and smiled at her. “Freda, I’ve made the restaurant reservation. We can head straight there.”
“Thanks, Edric. We absolutely have to close this deal with the medical group. That way we won’t have to hunt for medical teams separately anymore.” Freda smiled, shaking off the gloom that Cyril had brought her.
“With CEO Lane on the case, there’s no deal we can’t close.”
Edric was both Freda’s business partner and the company’s legal counsel.
She’d only recently learned that Edric was extremely wealthy–he was the heir to the Vale family of the capital, even richer than Cyril.
He’d gotten into law because he genuinely loved it. But he’d become a lawyer because of her.
Still, Freda didn’t want to date anyone. Her life revolved around her career.
Edric didn’t seem to be in a hurry either, just quietly staying by her side, occasionally asking her out under the guise
of work.
Twenty years flew by. Freda helped more and more villages escape poverty, became one of the nation’s top ten entrepreneurs, and went further and further in the field she loved.
After twenty years of companionship, Edric finally got his reward–he and Freda got their marriage certificate, making him her legal husband.
As for Cyril, he remained in a coma for twenty years. Just before dying, he had a moment of lucidity and opened his
eyes.
He said he’d traveled through time, back to when he and Freda were deeply in love. This time, he didn’t betray her or cheat. They got married, had children, and lived happily ever after…
