Chapter 6
Garrick stood outside my door for two tull days and nights.
Even on the eve of my departure, I never let him in.
Bathed in moonlight, his tall figure cast a long shadow against my door. Then he spoke.
“Lysandra, I will marry you.”
I leaned against the door in silence.
“I’ll spend the rest of my life making up for what I did. I swear it to you as a soldier.”
Still, I said nothing
He lingered outside a moment longer–then his footsteps faded away.
Inside, I smiled, a single tear tracing my check
On the day I was to cross the border, I wore a crimson dress and mounted my horse alone.
No servants. Not even Maude.
This is my burden to bear alone–no point dragging others down with me.
Today also happened to be Garrick and Selene’s wedding day.
He was probably just now receiving the little gift I’d left for him.
What I didn’t expect… was to find him waiting for me along my route.
My face was hidden beneath a veil as he looked deep into my eyes.
“Let me escort you.”
I said nothing and rode past him. He turned his horse around and followed,
“Are you angry because married Lysandra?”
I froze.
So… he thought I was Selene.
Clearly, he hadn’t gotten the surprise yet.
“But… it’s something I owed her.”
I remained silent.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t stop this from happening”
Still, I said nothing.
“But..”
Then he grabbed my reins.
you regret this, I can make you vanish tonight. No one will ever find you.”
I turned to look at him.
Then I knocked his hand away, dug my heels into my horse, and rode hard into the waste
Behind me,
his voice fractured against the wind.
