Chapter 3
“We’re going to the bridal shop later. You’re coming too.”
Daniel stood at the top of the stairs with his arm around Sophia, and he gave me the order flatly.
On the way there, Sophia suddenly clutched her stomach and said she was hungry.
“I really want one of those famous sandwiches from the west side. I heard they’re amazing.”
She clung to Daniel’s arm with a coy smile. “But we also have to get to the dress fitting…”
Daniel immediately got the hint and turned to me. “Go get it.”
Sophia chimed in with a sweet smile. “Hannah, I want it hot and fresh, straight out of the oven. Thanks a bunch.”
I frowned slightly as I looked out at the torrential downpour.
Daniel stared coldly at me. “What? You don’t even want to do some easy thing like this?”
I said nothing and shook my head. The next second, Daniel shoved me out of the car.
It was nearly impossible to hail a cab in this kind of storm. I stood in the rain for half an hour before finally flagging one
down.
By the time I reached the sandwich shop, I was completely soaked through.
“I’m so sorry,” the staff said apologetically, “we just sold out of sandwiches. We’ll have to bake a new batch, and that’ll
take about an hour.”
I still chose to wait.
I didn’t want another meaningless fight over something like this.
An hour later, I carried the steaming sandwiches and rushed back through the rain.
The downpour had grown even heavier. Even with my jacket shielding the box, water still seeped in.
By the time I returned to the bridal shop, I was shivering from head to toe. My lips had turned purple, and my teeth were
chattering uncontrollably.
Daniel and Sophia were sitting in the lounge area, waiting for me.
When Daniel saw the state I was in, his brows immediately furrowed.
“What took you so long?”
“It was raining. The roads were jammed,” I explained briefly, my hands trembling as I passed the food box to Sophia.
She gave me a little shove. The box slipped from my hands.
The sauce spilled all over the wedding gown beside her.

It was the one she had just tried on–the one she said she liked the most.
“Ahhh!”
Sophia let out a sharp shriek. “My wedding dress!”
The pure white lace was now stained with streaks of sauce.
“Hannah!”
Daniel exploded in rage. He kicked over the food box on the ground, sending the rest of the sauce splashing all over my
legs.
The hot sauce soaked through my soaked pants and scalded my skin. I gasped from the searing pain.
“You did this on purpose!”
Daniel pointed at me, his eyes blazing with fury. “You just can’t stand to see us happy, can you?!”
“I didn’t-”
“You still want to deny it?!”
Daniel’s eyes cut into me like knives. “Kneel!”
“What?”
“Kneel! Stay there until Sophia’s no longer upset!”
The other customers in the store had all stopped to watch the scene. Whispers echoed all around me.
“What’s going on?”
“That poor woman…”
I stood there, drenched and humiliated, with everyone’s eyes on me.
If this had been my past life, I would’ve been drowning in shame.
But now, all I felt was exhaustion.
Bone–deep exhaustion.
Slowly, I sank to my knees.
The cold, hard floor instantly numbed my legs.
“Daniel…”
Sophia spoke softly, “Let it go. She didn’t mean to.”
“No.”

Daniel’s voice was ice cold. “She needs to understand what she’s done wrong.”
I knelt there, staring at the broken box on the floor.
Outside, the rain was still falling.
Just like the night years ago when I had a high fever, and Daniel sat by my bedside the entire night.
Back then, he would place his hand on my forehead with worry, tell me stories to help me sleep, and gently pat my back when I woke from nightmares.
“Hannah, don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
“Your brother will always protect you.”
That Daniel had looked at me with nothing but love and tenderness.
But now, he couldn’t even stand to glance my way.
The rain poured harder as I knelt on the freezing floor, feeling the warmth slowly drain from my body.
I didn’t know how much time passed before dizziness overtook me, and my vision turned to a blur.
