Chapter 22
Cassandra said, “Come on, I’m interviewing for a hotel manager role, not auditioning to be some bar girl.”
Daisy lowered her voice like she was revealing a secret. “I asked around, and it turns out that the young owner at Westwood Hotel has quite the specific taste. He’s only into sexy women. I was actually planning to take one for the team, bave dinner with him, and help you land the job. But sadly, I’m not his type. Looks like you’ll have to handle this one yourself.”
“It’s just a hotel manager position. No need to bring up your name over something like that,” Cassandra said.
“You don’t get it,” Daisy whispered. “The hotel you’re applying to is the most luxurious one in Stokelle. The standards are insanely high. Ever since he took over, he has fired more than 20 managers in a row.”
“He’s really that picky?”
“Exactly. He’s super mysterious and has barely shown his face all these years. Hardly anyone knows what he even looks like. I had to spend some money just to dig up this tiny bit of info, and now, I’m spilling it all to you.”
Cassandra’s phone vibrated. Cameron had texted her. “Have fun with Daisy. Let me know when you want to come back and I’ll pick you up.”
A moment later, he sent another one. “Use the card I gave you. Don’t worry about saving money for me.”
He probably had someone check the flight records and saw that Daisy really was flying with her to Stokelle. That must have eased his mind.
Daisy glanced over. “Cameron?”
Cassandra turned off the screen. “Yeah.”
“He’s pretty generous, letting you spend his money.”
“Yeah? Well, he also got another woman pregnant and expects me to help raise that child.”
Daisy was stunned. She wanted to ask questions, but she was afraid of hitting a sore spot. After a long pause, she decided to stay silent.
A wave of sadness washed over Cassandra. Even her closest friend couldn’t believe that Cameron actually had a child with someone else.
Everyone probably assumed she and Cameron had the perfect relationship, but their love was like a shiny apple–glossy on the outside, rotten at the core.
Once the plane landed, Daisy dragged her straight to Westwood Hotel and booked a room. She

claimed it was for a good reason. “If you don’t personally experience what a customer goes through, how are you supposed to serve them better in the future?”
Cassandra figured she had a point, so she handed over her ID and booked the room. When it came time to pay, she used the card her father had given her years ago.
Back when Robert was drowning in debt and about to go to prison, he had left her a bank card, “Cassie, I hid this away in secret. I don’t know if I’ll ever make it back. This is the last thing I can do for you. After this, you’re on your own.”
All these years, she couldn’t bring herself to touch the money in that account. Especially after her parents passed away, she treasured every single thing they had left behind even more.
Daisy asked, “Why not use Cameron’s card? No reason to waste free money.”
“I don’t want to give him any excuse to contact me again,” Cassandra replied.
On Sunday afternoon, Cassandra bought herself a professional skirt suit and a pair of black heels online.
On Monday morning, she dressed simply but sharply and headed to the hotel’s offices on the 64th floor. There were already quite a few candidates. The receptionist sent them all to a conference room to wait for their names to be called.
While waiting, Cassandra suddenly caught sight of a familiar figure.
“Professor Myers?” she called out.
Javier recognized her too. “Cassandra? Are you here on vacation?”
