At that moment, Cassidy emerged from the kitchen, beaming.
“Susy, you’re always so clever and level–headed. It was your idea to have Niamh talk to Julian, and it really worked. Honestly, you’re the Neville family’s good luck charm.”
Susy grinned too.
She wasn’t smiling just because her future mother–in–law praised her so warmly, but because Marina’s plan seemed to be working.
Late at night.
The suburbs were eerily quiet.
Niamh had just pulled out of Julian’s driveway when she realized she was being tailed.
Two cars. Both better than hers. And she was sure there was more than one person in each.
Her hands tightened on the steering wheel, slick with sweat.
Ebonwood Hall.
Marina hadn’t slept a wink that night. She was waiting for news from Susy.
Finally, at three in the morning, a message popped up on WhatsApp:
It’s done.
Those two words sent a jolt of adrenaline through Marina. Her excitement was so intense she knew she wouldn’t sleep at all.
Daybreak.
Inside the Thomas Group CEO’s office, Prescott was giving his report.
“That’s the current progress on all projects.”
“Good.”
Jonathan listened, then gave Prescott a few instructions.
Prescott was about to leave when Jonathan’s voice, calm and almost offhand, stopped him:
Chapter 322
“What’s Niamh been up to lately?”
Prescott halted, turning back with a puzzled look.
How was he supposed to know what Niamh had been doing?
But he couldn’t say that to Jonathan.
Jonathan’s gaze was clear–he didn‘
want to ask twice.
“I’ll look into it right away.”
After Prescott left, Jonathan picked up his phone.
Why bother asking Prescott about Niamh? All he had to do was call her.
But he didn’t want to call.
A few minutes later, Prescott returned, looking flustered.
“What is it?” Jonathan asked.
“I found out… Miss Rivers… it seems something happened to her…”
Jonathan shot to his feet.
The royal blue Bentley tore through the city, running two red lights in a row.
Jonathan was behind the wheel, glancing at the GPS. Quartus Medical Center wasn’t far now.
So why did it still feel so far away?
Prescott had told him: last night, Niamh was attacked by thugs in the suburbs. Elmer arrived in time and stopped them before they could hurt her further, but Niamh’s hands were badly injured–multiple fractures, possibly permanent damage. The Bentley finally screeched into the Quartus Medical Center parking lot.
Jonathan jumped out and sprinted inside.
It was the first time he’d ever run into a hospital.
The place wasn’t large; he quickly found Niamh’s room.
But before he could reach the door, someone came out.
A man.
Jonathan wasn’t surprised to see Elmer.
Chapter382
But Elmer looked startled to see him.
“What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to see Niamh.”
“How did you know she was in the hospital?”
Jonathan frowned, refusing to answer, and tried to step past Elmer.
“Hold on,” Elmer said, raising an arm to block him.
Elmer’s features were classically handsome, his manner gentle–almost scholarly–but that didn’t mean he lacked presence.
Jonathan didn’t know why he didn’t just force his way through.
He waited quietly at the door as Elmer stepped inside, then came back out.
“Nia said she doesn’t want to see you.”
