Chapter 289
The brakes were working just fine when she arrived.
But by the time she left, they had failed.
Who could have known in advance that she and Chester were getting a divorce, and
waited in secret outside the courthouse?
She’d only taken that car on a whim, but so had Chester–it was pure coincidence
for both of them.
Still, the odds of her being the target were much higher.
Whoever was behind this, they were after her.
And she couldn’t shake the feeling that the truck had been lying in wait, ready to plow straight into them.
A knot twisted in Celestine’s stomach. “Is the car still around?”
Pete took a moment to recall. “It’s been towed to the traffic division. The truck driver ran off at the scene, but someone called the police. They caught him pretty quickly, and the case is still under investigation.”
Celestine’s mind drifted–it was all so eerily similar to what had happened to her
parents years ago.
She glanced instinctively at her grandfather.
His face was clouded with the same turmoil.
She knew he must be thinking exactly what she was.
“Grandpa, don’t worry. I’m all right now,” Celestine said gently, hoping to keep him. from falling back into those painful memories.
He managed a nod, though the lines on his face deepened. “As long as you’re safe, that’s all that matters,” Luther said, his voice heavy with age and concern. “Promise me, Celly–let the police handle this.”
Meeting his sorrowful gaze, Celestine found herself unable to refuse.
But after wrestling with her thoughts, she decided she needed to check on Chester herself.
His room had been moved up to the eighth floor.

The doctors said his injuries were much more severe than hers. The blow to his head was especially bad–it was one of the main reasons he was still
unconscious.
As she approached the hospital room, Celestine heard Dahlia’s voice, raw and desperate, echoing down the hall.
“It’s all that woman’s fault! If it weren’t for Celestine, Chester wouldn’t be lying here like this! She woke up, but it’s my son paying the price!”
They must have found out she was awake.
“Enough! Keep your voice down–the boy’s still unconscious! Do you want the whole city to gossip about our family? I told you, Celestine is your daughter–in–law. Stop pushing them so hard! At this point, none of us are blameless.”
The familiar voice came from inside the room–Chester’s father, Sanderson Fordham. He’d spent years obsessed with outdoor adventures, mostly abroad running his own expedition company. Chester had been set up as his successor, but stepped back from the family business early on, never getting involved in the domestic affairs.
The argument inside was only getting louder, so Celestine decided to slip away.
Just then, the door swung open.
Serena, Chester’s sister, couldn’t take the suffocating tension anymore. With her brother lying in a hospital bed and her parents arguing like nothing had changed, she just needed to escape for a breath of air.
“Celestine?” Serena called, uncertain, spotting her just as she was turning to leave.
Celestine froze mid–step.
Inside the room, Dahlia’s sharp ears caught the name. Forgetting her clash with Sanderson, she stormed out, rage blazing in her eyes.
“Well, well! You little homewrecker! Look what you’ve done to Chester–he’s not even himself anymore! And you have the nerve to show your face here!”
With that, Dahlia lunged, hand raised for a slap.
But Celestine was ready, Protecting her casted arm, she shifted aside and dodged just in time.
Dahlia, thrown off balance by her own force, nearly stumbled to the floor.
Humiliated, her anger only grew hotter. “How dare you dodge me!”
