Of course I was the villain in his story. The overreacting, dramatic she–wolf who dared to be
bothered by the fact that her mate couldn’t keep another girl out of their relationship.
“Theo,” I said coldly, each word slicing between us like a blade. “Take Elena. And get the hell out of
my house.”
His face darkened.
Jaw clenched. Fists curling like a wolf ready to snap.
And just as I’d expected, Elena stepped into the spotlight like clockwork–eyes red, lip trembling,
robe clutched to her chest like some damsel in distress.
“Anya, please don’t be mad at Theo…”
She looked up at me, all wide–eyed and sickly sweet.
“He’s been miserable without you. I’ve seen it. You guys are just hurting each other like this. Why not just stop fighting and go back to how it used to be?”
I could smell my body wash on her skin.
See droplets of water from my shower still rolling down her collarbone.
And in the corner of my vision, Theo stood there pretending to stay neutral, pretending not to care.
Like he wasn’t soaking in every word she said.
He crossed his arms and muttered, “You seriously think being a mate means acting like this? Try being half as decent as Elena for once.”
He waved me off, and I watched Elena smile like she’d just won.
She turned to me, voice syrupy.
“Anya, we’re friends—”
“No, we’re not.”
I jerked away the second she tried to touch my arm.
“Don’t ever call me that again.”
Then I turned to Theo, whose stunned expression told me he still didn’t think I had it in me.

I pointed straight at the door.
“Get out. Both of you.”
I had never embarrassed him like this before. Not even on my birthday, when he let Elena humiliate me in front of everyone. Even then, I held it in. Tried to walk away with whatever dignity I had left.
It was only when he mocked me with her–that I snapped and said we should break the bond.
But now?
Now I just wished I’d seen him for what he was sooner.
He finally cracked.
“You’re serious right now?”
“You’re really going to break the mate bond over this?”
“Anya!” His voice boomed through the room. “You can’t just walk away! You don’t get to decide that! What the hell did I even do that was so unforgivable?”
He was yelling now. Unhinged.
But I just stared at him.
Because I’d already decided. Long ago. I just hadn’t said it out loud.
And maybe for the first time, he realized it too.
His grip tightened on my wrist, desperate now. Accusing.
“You’ve got someone else, don’t you?”
“That’s it, isn’t it? You found a new måte!”
I didn’t even blink.
I didn’t flinch.
Because the truth?
I didn’t need another mate to walk away from the wrong one.
