Chapter 16
“Calvin, please don’t be angry! Simon just got into trouble himself. He ate some hot food right out of the fryer. That’s why he got hurt…” Britney tried to explain, but Calvin didn’t even let her finish.
He grabbed her by the throat, his eyes burning with rage. “How long are you planning to lie to me? Britney, I trusted you. I left Noah and Simon in your care, and this is how you treat them?
“You don’t pick them up from school, you don’t give them food, and you abuse them when I’m not around. They’re just kids! How could you treat them this way?”
He tightened his grip as he spoke.
Britney’s eyes went wide. She hadn’t expected Calvin to know everything. She tried to defend herself. “It’s not what you think. Calvin…”
He cut her off with a cold glare, gripping her chin so tightly it felt like he might snap it. “Not what I think? I’ve clearly let you get away with too much. And now, you even have the nerve to lie to my face!
“I’ve told you a thousand times, you could’ve had everything, except the title of my wife. But that still wasn’t enough for you, was it?”
The fury in his eyes burned like fire. Britney had never seen Calvin like this before. She started to tremble, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“I’m sorry, Calvin. I just love you so much… I couldn’t help myself. Please don’t be mad. I promise I’ll do whatever you say from now on…”
She tried her usual act, playing the victim, thinking a few tears would get her out of trouble like always.
However, Calvin only found her tears disgusting.
“You killed Henry. You’ve been lying to me this whole time. How could you do that to Avery?”
Britney had tormented his sons, and Simon couldn’t even speak now. She had driven Avery away. Was this really the woman he had once loved?
Calvin stared coldly at Britney as she struggled for breath, her face turning blue.
For the first time, he just felt nothing but disgust. How could he ever have let Avery leave because of a
woman like this?
Right before Britney blacked out, Calvin finally let go, throwing her to the floor.
She coughed and gasped, trying to plead. “Please, Calvin, let me explain! I did it for a reason! I just wanted to be with you!”
Calvin stood over her, looking down coldly.
Britney crawled to his feet, desperate. “We’re the ones who belong together. I just couldn’t stand watching

Avery take my place. All I wanted was to be your wife. Noah and Simon never listened to me. I thought we’d have our kids someday. They’re just Avery’s kids. I…”
Calvin slapped her hard across the face. “Noah and Simon are my sons. You will never be with me,” he
said coldly.
Britney stared at him in disbelief, clutching her face. “What are you saying, Calvin? Don’t you love me? If you really care about Noah and Simon, I swear I’ll never do anything like this again! I’ll treat them like my own! Please, Calvin, how can you say we’re over? Don’t you remember how we used to be…”
Calvin slapped her again, leaving the other side of Britney’s face swollen as well.
“I must’ve been blind to ever fall for someone as cruel as you. I’m bringing Avery back. And you’re going to pay for everything you’ve done.”
Britney looked stunned, too shocked to cry.
Before she could say anything else, the bodyguards stepped in and dragged her out. She reached out,
begging, “Calvin, let me explain! Please, listen to me!”
But Calvin didn’t even glance her way. The spell was broken, and all that was left was regret and
bitterness.
He went back to the boys’ room and wrapped both sons in his arms. It took a few seconds for the boys to
process everything, but then, both of them started crying uncontrollably.
Not long after, the family doctor arrived in a hurry.
After examining Simon, he said the burns on Simon’s tongue, mouth, throat, and esophagus were so
severe that he might never speak normally again. Even recovery would be extremely painful.
Noah’s scalp and skin were badly injured too. While not as serious as Simon’s, the damage could still
leave permanent scars.
Calvin’s heart ached as he watched his sons finally fall asleep. He couldn’t stop thinking about Avery. She
had suffered so much because of Britney, even losing her brother.
