Ryan stiffened slightly.
He wondered if she had figured it out.
Well, even if she did, it had to come out sooner or later.
He licked his lips. The secret he’d kept buried for 15 years was bubbling up, and even he felt nervous and unsure.
“Cassandra, I actually”
“You really are doing everything you can for Cameron, huh? Loyal to a fault!”
Ryan’s smile froze, “What?”
Cassandra started counting with her fingers. “First, you used the Westwood Hotel to get me a job and bring me to Stokelle, putting physical distance between me and Cameron. Then, you helped uncover the truth about Snowball’s death, cutting the last emotional tie I had with him.
“And now, you’ve got me babysitting your three oversized pets, feeding and cleaning up after
them.”
She came to a conclusion. “You’re still worried that I might change my mind at the last minute and decide not to get divorced, aren’t you?
“Don’t worry. I’m absolutely getting divorced. Your good buddy is nothing but a pile of–well, let’s just say I’d rather stay far away from him. Getting involved with him again? No way!”
Ryan listened silently.
At first, his brows were tightly furrowed, but as she kept talking, his expression gradually
relaxed.
Her reasoning was all over the place, but the conclusion was exactly what he wanted to hear.
It was like taking different paths but leading to the same destination.
He smiled slightly and started the engine.
But the car wasn’t headed back to the hotel.
Cassandra looked out at the passing trees and started to feel something was off. “Aren’t we going back?”
“There’s something else we need to do.”
“What is it?”
Ryan took her to a department store.
Chapter 79
They left the dogs in the car, rolling down the windows for air. Then, he led her straight to the women’s clothing section.
“Mr. Scott, what are you doing?”
“Getting you a new outfit. I need your help tonight.”
He picked out a white sundress printed with sunflowers and paired it with a pair of silver heels covered in rhinestones. “Have her try these on.”
A saleswoman led Cassandra to the fitting room. Miss, right this way.”
“I haven’t even told you my size-
“Your boyfriend’s one of our regulars. He buys clothes for you all the time, so we know your size very well.”
Cassandra blinked. “He knows my size?”
“Of course!”
Wait. Something wasn’t adding up.
Ryan’s girlfriend was Janice. Janice was an inch or so shorter than her and had a more athletic build. Her size had to be completely different.
“You probably got the wrong size. I’ll go pick out my own.”
“No way! We’re in the fashion business–we can tell your size just by looking. And boyfriend picked the perfect fit. See for yourself!
Cassandra glanced at the dress and shoes.
Size M and size 7.5.
The dress was spot on, but the shoes seemed half a size too big.
your
“That was his special request. He said high heels should be half a size larger for comfort. He even had us prepare insoles so your feet wouldn’t feel squeezed. It’ll be easier to walk, too.”
As the saleswoman went on, that thought Cassandra had earlier started creeping back again.
Ryan knew a little too much about her.
Even Cameron had only ever bought her size 7. It hadn’t mattered, be it heels, sneakers, or flats.
He never once considered sizing up for heels or even heard of insoles.
She asked, “Has he bought a lot of women’s clothes and shoes from you before?”
The saleswoman beamed. “Oh, tons! Mr. Scott is a VIP here. He stops by every season to get new items. We always wondered why we never saw his girlfriend in person. We’re so happy to
