stayed in the hospital for exactly one week.
Ethan never left my side for that entire week.
Jake never appeared once.
He vanished like he’d evaporated, comfortably abandoning this absurd scam to his brother.
Ethan’s disguise was successful, but flaws still existed.
On the second day in the hospital, the aide brought the standard, bland hospital meal.
Ethan glanced at it, his brow furrowing almost imperceptibly.
He said nothing, just turned and left the room.
Half an hour later, he returned with an elegant insulated food container.

The aroma of the food instantly overpowered the smell of disinfectant in the room.
He set up a small table on my hospital bed and arranged the dishes one by one.
Three dishes and a soup, a balance of meat and vegetables, even a warm dessert.
I asked him: “Did you go buy this yourself?”
“Yes, the hospital food lacks nutrition.”
Looking at the steamed sea bass, I said with a touch of post-illness petulance:
“I want fish, but could you remove the bones for me?”
In his mind, he was rapidly searching for how a “good husband” should respond.
After a few seconds, he silently sat down and picked up the plate of fish.

His long fingers held the chopsticks, carefully removing every tiny bone from the snow-white fish meat, ther
neatly arranging the deboned pieces in a bowl.
He didn’t know that Jake would never do this for me.
He was playing this role more attentively than Jake ever did.
‘Done.” He pushed the bowl of fish meat in front of me.
ate in small bites while he watched.
Only after I finished did he take a napkin and lean forward.
His cool fingertips brushed against the corner of my lips, sending a slight shiver through me.
On the tenth day of my hospitalization, he used the excuse that the room was too stuffy and took me out for
‘fresh air.”
But the car drove all the way to a hotel in the city center.
In the top-floor suite, he stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back straight and lonely, as if he was trying hard to suppress something.
I walked over and gently hugged his tense waist from behind.
“Husband, why did we come here?”
His body instantly stiffened like a stone.
After a long while, he turned around, his unfathomable eyes locked on mine, his voice extremely hoarse:
“Nicole, the doctor said… familiar environments and intimate contact can help recover memories.”

What a convenient excuse.
I looked up at him, pretending to be innocent, my fingers caressing his face, tracing his features bit by bit.
“You seem… thinner.”
My fingertip finally stopped at the corner of his right eye.
There was an extremely faint brown mole there.
Jake didn’t have one.
I had examined Jake’s face countless times while he slept, making sure he didn’t have this mark.
Like discovering a new toy, my fingertip gently rubbed that small tear-mole.

“Husband, that tear mole is so pretty.”
I clearly saw Ethan’s Adam’s apple move dramatically.
His eyes filled with a darkness I couldn’t understand, like the sea before a storm.

The next second, he gripped the back of my head and silenced all my words with an almost brutal kiss.
Just like before-clumsy, forceful, filled with undisguised possessiveness.
Every time I winced in pain, he doubled his effort, as if he wanted to devour me whole.
The more forceful he was, the more submissive I became.
