Chapter 7
Before I turned seventeen, just how close were Noah Carter and I?
Everyone who knew us understood one simple truth–wherever Noah was, I’d be there too.
We were like characters bound by fate, our lives entangled from the very beginning.
Born on the same day, same month, same year, neighbors since kindergarten,
classmates every single term, even our desks forever side by side.
Destiny had written us as a pair and we never once strayed from the script.
The first piece of candy Noah ever received, he shared with me.
The first fight he ever got into was because he didn’t want other boys bullying me.
And the first time I got my period, he ran to the store–ears bright red–to buy pads for me.
From childhood through early adolescence, Noah never missed a single moment of my life.
Our closeness wasn’t something we flaunted.
It simply was. Natural. Inseparable.
So, at school, everyone assumed that it was only a matter of time before we got together.
And I had believed that too.
Until Elise Simmons appeared in our sophomore year.
She had transferred in from another state, and was placed directly into Noah’s honors class.
The first time I heard her name was after the midterms that fall.
An unknown new student suddenly ranked second in the entire school–just one point behind Noah.
He still held first place.
That day, after the results were posted, Viola sucked on a lollipop and whistled in awe.
“Wow, that Elise almost beat your Noah.”
I smiled and didn’t take it seriously at all.
“Relax. He’s way too good. No one’s catching up to him.”
What I didn’t realize then was that the “catching up” she mentioned had nothing to do with grades.
It meant something else entirely.
And I had completely underestimated that girl in the worst possible way.
