“Mint, it’s not like we’re trying to pressure you. We just can’t bear to watch Noah keep suffering like this.”
“If there were any other way, we wouldn’t be asking you.”
“Do you even know what Noah’s been through these past seven years?”
“If it weren’t for Elise staying by his side, he might not even be alive today.”
“Noah really loves you. All these years, he’s been waiting for you.”
Their words came one after another, almost no different from the posts I’d seen in the group chat the past few days. Elise Simmons had already started crying. Her tears streamed down, one after the other. Resentment, blame, pleading–a tangle of conflicting emotions swirled in her eyes.
“Mint, you don’t feel sorry for Noah, but I do.”
“You win. I’m begging you–just talk to him, okay? After that, I swear I’ll never come between you two again.”
My head was pounding.
It felt like the name “Noah” was echoing endlessly in my mind.
And at that exact moment, I got a message from Ethan: [Got it, wifey. Can’t wait for you to come home!]
He even attached a photo–shirtless, freshly out of the shower, flexing his abs.
I wanted to laugh.
But it was a completely inappropriate time to do so.
I looked around at the group and gave my answer in a cold, firm voice.
“I’m not going.”
“Why not?!”
“Because I’m married.”
The room fell instantly silent. Every face went blank in that moment–then turned uniformly complicated.
Someone glanced behind me.
“Noah…”
I turned around and saw Noah, pale and unsteady, standing there…just in time to meet my eyes.
