I had gotten married two years ago.
Aside from my family, very few people knew about it.
For one, I had been living abroad.
For another, my husband Ethan’s identity was sensitive, so it wasn’t something I could publicize.
But if someone had really looked into it, they still could have found some scattered news online about our private
marriage.
This time, I had only planned to stay in the country for half a month.
Other than the people I had to see, I didn’t intend to share my personal life with anyone, including Noah.
There was no need. And besides…I didn’t think we’d ever see each other again.
But I hadn’t expected…this whole scene before my departure.
All those people who had been so insistent, urging me to give Noah another chance,
fell completely silent.
The world, finally, was quiet.
Everyone–except Noah.
It was as if something had dawned on him. His eyes stayed locked on my hand.
There, on my finger, was a faint indentation from a ring.
He had never noticed it before. And I didn’t disappoint him–I pulled the ring from my bag and put it on.
The moment that shallow mark was covered, tears began streaming down Noah’s face.
“Why? Why? Didn’t you say you’d only ever marry me?”
He kept repeating the question. His eyes, now red and glistening, stared up at me.
“You lied, didn’t you? Mint, say something. Tell me you were lying…”
Noah looked so heartbroken that it could’ve moved anyone.
But no one said a word.
Not even me.
Yes, I had said that.
But it had been a childish promise, no different from the one he wrote in his old notebook when he was seventeen:

Noah broke down completely, his whole body trembling.

He clutched at the hem of my coat.
Unable to stay on his feet, he collapsed to the floor.
“Mint, I regret it… I really regret everything…”
He kept muttering to himself.
I didn’t know when his regret had started.
But Noah said, “If I’d known this would happen, I would never have given that extra admission spot to Elise Simmons.”
