Victor pondered for a moment, then shifted his focus to Jose.

“He’s also a direct heir of the main Wynn bloodline. Don’t tell me he doesn’t have any ambitions?”
To Victor, that seemed impossible.
By Wynn family tradition, only a direct male heir from the main branch could become the next head of the family.
Jose wasn’t born of Wendy, but the woman named Susie had been legally wed to Chase. That made her son fully qualified.
Victor simply couldn’t believe Susie and her son weren’t tempted by the prospect.
With that, he gave the order: “Arrange for me to meet Susie.”
All he remembered about Susie was that she was Jonathan’s stepmother and that their relationship wasn’t close. Beyond that, he didn’t know much.
But Maddox instantly understood what Victor was aiming for.
“Susie and Ms. Wendy are close,” Maddox said. “She’s also been consistently kind to Jonathan over the years.”
“In fact, Jose once considered vying for the position, but Susie stopped him.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed. “You said she and Wendy are close?“.
That seemed to trigger something. He immediately had someone pull up Susie’s photo.
Susie, as Chase’s wife, kept a very low profile. Good photos were rare–most of what they found were from the wedding.
And even that wedding had been quiet and discreet, because of Jonathan.
Victor stared at the picture for a long time, but still couldn’t determine Susie’s identity with any certainty.
Maybe it was just a coincidence.
Wendy was an extroverted woman with many friends over the years.
The more he thought about it, the more he wondered if he was overthinking things.
“Still, arrange the meeting as soon as possible,” Victor said.
Since Victor insisted, Maddox could only follow orders.
Although Susie seldom left home–especially after learning Victor had arrived in Capital City–she did have family matters that required her to return to the Zach residence.
As soon as she stepped out, Maddox approached.

“It’s been a while.”
“Maddox…”
Susie certainly knew Maddox, and she also knew he and Jonathan had recently fallen out.
“I wonder if Madam has a moment? Someone would like to meet with you.”
At those words, Susie felt her heart tighten.

She could’ve refused, but she knew Victor’s nature–if he wanted something, he would find a way to get it.
There was no avoiding this meeting.
She had already mentally prepared herself when she learned Jonathan would be going up against Victor.
“Let’s go,” she said softly.
Even with that preparation, the moment she saw Victor, Susie’s body stiffened. It was an instinctive, bone- deep fear.
Victor turned at the sound of footsteps.
When he saw Susie walking in, he instinctively stood up
For a brief instant, he thought he was seeing the woman he once loved.
Faces could change with time–but the way a person walked didn’t.
As she got closer, he realized it was an unfamiliar face. It was Susie’s.
Then, he automatically looked into her eyes.
It had been too long–he could barely recall the eyes of the woman he remembered. Looking now, he felt both familiarity and uncertainty.
Susie, sensing his gaze, felt a chill down her spine, but held her composure.
“And you are…?”
As soon as she spoke, Victor relaxed slightly.
He might not have recognized the eyes, but the voice–he would never forget that. The woman he had loved had a soft, melodious voice..
This woman’s voice was raspy, like her vocal cords had been damaged.
Victor slowly stood and greeted her. “Hello, Madam. I’m Victor.”
He extended his hand.
But Susic ignored it and walked to the opposite side of the room.
So, you’re Mr. Victor.”

“And what business do you have with me? I believe you should be speaking to my husband–or Jonathan.”
Victor chuckled. “There are some matters that require a woman’s touch.”
Then, leaning back in his chair, he added, “You’re not quite what I expected.”
His impression of Wendy had always been vivid. He couldn’t understand why Chase would cheat on her for someone like this.
This woman wasn’t particularly beautiful. Her temperament was unremarkable. In every way, she seemed
average.
He couldn’t fathom why Chase would walk away from Wendy for her.
His mind ran through countless thoughts as he scrutinized Susie.
“I’ve heard,” he said slowly, “that you’ve been very good to the Wynn heir. What a shame he doesn’t seem to appreciate it.”
