Susie immediately understood Victor’s intent. She gave a faint smile. “No need to test me. No need to doubt me. My son and I have no interest in such things. I’m just a simple woman who wants a peaceful life with my husband and son. Nothing more. I already have more money than I can spend.”
Susie had no desire to linger a second longer. She added plainly, “If that’s all, I’ll take my leave.”
“Wait.”
After going through all the trouble to arrange this meeting, Victor had no intention of letting her walk away so easily.
“You shouldn’t speak in absolutes.”
“You can’t speak for your son. Young people always have ideas of their own. They’re bolder, more impulsive–they want more.”
“Don’t you dare target my son.”
Susie’s warning cut sharp through the room. Her demeanor shifted in an instant.
Only moments ago she’d appeared slightly intimidated–now she stood like a lioness guarding her cub.
“Victor, let me warn you: this isn’t your country.”
She turned to leave. As she passed Maddox, she paused meaningfully.
“Maddox, you’ve made a poor choice.”
Maddox’s face stiffened with discomfort. Though he hadn’t heard the conversation inside, Susie’s fury told him enough–Victor must have used Chase to manipulate her.
After Susie left, Maddox stepped into the priváte room, expecting to find Victor seething.
Instead, he found him completely distracted, lost in thought.
“Mr. Victor?” he called.
Victor snapped out of it and glanced up at him. Then, out of nowhere, he said,
“I want everything you can find on this woman named Susie.”
Maddox frowned. “Mr. Victor, even if her relationship with Jonathan is distant, she’s still Chase’s wife- Jonathan’s stepmother.”
He meant to caution Victor not to waste energy on someone of minor importance. But Victor’s response was pure rage.
“Do what I say.”
“Young man, your family’s future still depends on me.”

It felt like a slap to Maddox’s face. His chest rose and fell sharply with suppressed frustration–but in the next second, he calmed down.
“Yes, Mr. Victor. I’ll do everything I can to get what you need.”
Victor still wore a stormy expression.
His thoughts were a mess. Gone was the gentlemanly mask he usually wore he couldn’t maintain it any longer.
Just now, Susie’s mannerisms and tone had been exactly like her.
The way she threatened him. The way she spoke.
Technology today could easily change someone’s appearance. But mannerisms… those couldn’t be forged.
He had a theory.
And the moment it entered his mind, he couldn’t sit still.
Though he’d already asked Maddox to investigate, Victor never relied on just one person.
That same night, Victor got his hands on Susie’s full background.
On paper, there was nothing suspicious. Every record from birth to present was clean–she was listed as a child of the Zach family.
But Victor still felt something was wrong. He read through the file again–and then h
v it.
During college, Susie had fallen gravely ill. Everyone thought she wouldn’t survive. Then, suddenly, she recovered–and her health was better than before.
Victor checked the date.
It was the same time Nancy had supposedly died.
Naney… the woman he had obsessed over for years.
His breathing grew shallow.
Then he looked into Susie and Wendy’s relationship. The records showed they had no contact at all–until after Susie recovered from her illness.
Now Victor could no longer sit still.”
If his theory was correct, then Susie was Nancy.
Nancy had faked her death. The body that had been buried was Susie’s.
Nancy had lived on—as Susie.
If Nancy hadn’t died… what about their child?
What about his child?

Maddox was jolted awake by a phone call in the middle of the night. He wasn’t pleased–until he saw the name on the screen.
“Mr. Victor?”
“I want Susie’s medical records,” Victor said coldly.
Maddox’s mouth twitched. He had no idea what Victor was suddenly fixated on, or why he now wanted Susie’s medical records of all things.
But Susie’s records weren’t something just anyone could obtain.
The Wynn family had their own private medical team.
Maybe Maddox could’ve come up with something before–but ever since Jonathan took over, the entire medical system had been locked down tight.
Still, Maddox knew Victor wouldn’t care about excuses. That was one of the most obvious things about this man–his arrogance and tyranny.
He didn’t care how something was done–only that it was.
So Maddox didn’t say it couldn’t be done. He just replied calmly:
“I’ll do my best to get it.”
