Chapter 28
Wendy interrupted Serena before she could finish her sentence.
“Calista is always like that. She turns the smallest issue into something bigger, and this time, she’s making a huge scene over the divorce again. She must be up to something. From now on, let Lucien and Calista handle their own business. You should stop worrying so much about it,” Wendy said with clear disgust in her voice.
Serena was furious, and she slammed her hand on the table. “Shut up!”
The sharp sound echoed through the living room.
Everyone fell silent instantly, and even Wendy held her tongue.
“None of you has ever taken her seriously. Not even you, Lucien. You’ve always been the most outstanding child in the Fenwick family, and you were the one I loved the most. But the way you’ve treated Calista really breaks my heart. If you still see me as your grandmother, call her right now.”
Lucien said, “She isn’t feeling well.”
“I want you to call her. Now.”
Lucien
Lucien then lifted his gaze and stared at Serena for a few seconds. Alexander also turned to look at him.
At Riverview Medical Center, Calista stood at the corner of the hallway, watching the man inside the room who had just regained consciousness.
A group of nurses gathered around Anthony to check on his condition.
Clarice stayed closed, tending to him. It looked like she had changed her mind about the divorce.
As long as Anthony was awake and safe, that was all that mattered to Calista.
Calista had only dropped by to steal a glance. She had already spent every last penny she had to pay for Anthony’s hospital bills. Now that she was back with the Fenwick family, she had all she needed to live comfortably.
Just as she was about to leave, her phone rang. When she saw the caller ID, her heart skipped a beat. She hesitated before answering and held the phone to her ear. “What’s wrong?”
“Cali, it’s me, Serena. Why didn’t you come for dinner? Lucien said that you weren’t feeling well.”
Calista paused for a moment, realizing that that was what he meant when he said he wasn’t coming home. He was staying at the Fenwick estate.
Calista had never missed a Fenwick family dinner before, and she would even bring Serena small gifts she thought were interesting.
Her voice was calm as she said, “Sorry, Grandma. I won’t be going over this time.”
“I’ll have Lucien pick you up later. You can stay with me for a few days and keep me company,” Serena offered.
Calista gave a faint smile, her nose stinging as she fought back her tears. Serena was the only one in the family who had ever truly treated her well.
“I’m sorry, Grandma. Maybe next time.”
Calista’s voice echoed through the quiet hall. No one expected her to actually turn down the offer.
Jason found it odd. Usually, just hearing that Lucien was coming to pick her up would’ve had Calista grinning from ear to ear. But that day, something was off. She had even turned him down.
He wondered if she was pulling the same old push–pull game again. Wasn’t Calista tired of playing tricks like that? Lucien had long since stopped falling for it.
“Grandma, I’m doing well at the Juniville estate, so I won’t come by to bother you for now,” Calista said.
Since Calista didn’t want to come, Serena didn’t push it further.
After the call ended, Calista hailed a cab outside the hospital. She gave the driver an address and headed back to the Juniville estate. Lucien wasn’t coming home that night, so she tidied up the house a little. As for dinner, she just made some pasta and a small salad.
