Chapter 48
When the waiting staff brought Calista to the private room, everyone inside was more or less hostile toward her.
“Where is he?” She stood at the door and swept her gaze around the room, not seeing Lucien anywhere.
“Why the lofty act? From what I’ve heard, you’re working at Riverview Medical Center, and you specifically asked for the job to serve patients in the VIP ward. Is that true?
“Calista, are you trying to find your next backer?” Jason was pissed off, and his words were nasty as well. He sauntered over to Calista, shut the door, and rested his hand on her shoulder.
She looked at his hand disdainfully, her eyebrows knitting tightly.
“If Lucien isn’t here, I’m leaving.” Then, she shook his hand off. She was in no mood to waste her time on rich heirs. All she wanted was some quiet time.
“Geez. Where’s the fire? We’re relatives, if you think about it. Since you need money that badly, I can point you in the right direction How about you work as a drink promoter at this club of mine? Maybe you’ll find your next rich husband here, too.”
Jason was so used to being arrogant and overbearing that he had no sense of what should and shouldn’t be said. His friends were cut from the same cloth as well.
They’d lost the jovial mood they started with. Now that Calista was here for them to get their digs in, they hastily went over and surrounded her.
“Hey, Jason. That’s not the right way to put it. Ms. Marchand was once Lucien’s wife. Of course, she doesn’t care for a small–time family. If you ask me, a drink promoter role sounds awesome.
“Ms. Marchand, if you’ll do the honors.” Jason’s rowdy friends were no better than him. He grabbed a bottle of wine and shoved it into Calista’s hands.
She didn’t want to take it, but she was surrounded on all sides, and they weren’t giving her the chance to refuse.
“You can leave after you pour me a glass.” One of the arrogant rich heirs, Fred Gonzalez, motioned with his glass before setting it on
the table.
Calista swept her gaze around her. They were all looking at her intently. It felt like she had walked into the belly of a beast, and there was nothing she could do to fight back.
Lucien must’ve plotted this. He sure knew how to demean people.
She calmly walked over to the coffee table and filled Fred’s glass with wine. The wine had just reached half of the glass when he walked over in high spirits and held her hip with one hand.
“Color me surprised. You have a darling figure, and you’re good at this. If you could turn up the charm a notch, I might be persuaded to give you more money”
As Fred spoke, he pulled out a wad of cash, looking as arrogant as could be, not paying Calista any respect. “This is fair, wouldn’t you say? It’s better than having to seduce the patients at the hospital.
“Here’s the deal. Finish the wine, and the money’s yours.” Then, he pinched Calista’s chin, and the others immediately grew excited.
In a matter of seconds, the room was filled with a chorus of whistles. Calista was nothing more than a plaything for them to mock and ridicule.
“Chug it! Chug it!” They egged her on as Fred crossed the line, inappropriately touching Calista.
Jason, who eagerly played the accomplice, seemed to sprout a brilliant idea. Pulling out his phone, he recorded the moment.
At the next second, a cacophony of noises rushed from the door.
Everyone froze where they stood and watched in a daze as Lucien walked in. They instinctively stopped what they were doing, too petrified to move.
The beat of music pounded incessantly, each thump setting everyone’s nerves on edge.
