Chapter 7
The moment he saw me, Ryder nearly jumped out of his skin.
Flustered, he moved to block Maddox from my view, trying to hide her behind him.
I approached slowly as the color drained from Ryder’s face.
“Phoenix…”
He attempted to stop me, but Maddox defiantly peeked out from behind him, boldly sizing me up.
“What’s wrong with you? Upset again?” she taunted, stepping out from behind Ryder and throwing her arm around his neck while winking at me.
“These injuries are all because you shared that video. Ryder’s just helping me out–don’t give him a hard
time when you get home, okay?”
Then she tugged on his ear and grimaced. “Take me home now, or I’ll tell your dad that you scratched my
face!”
Ryder looked at me nervously, testing the waters. “Phoenix, maybe we should… take Maddox home first?”
Sensing my hesitation, he quickly added, “It won’t take long.”
My gaze swept over Maddox.
Despite her injuries, she held her head high, not bothering to hide her smugness.
I smiled at them both. “Of course we can.”
In the hospital parking lot.
Maddox insisted on sitting in the front passenger seat.
“This used to be my special spot before you got married–now I can’t even sit here anymore!”
I opened the back door. “Go ahead and take it.”
This time, I didn’t bother talking much. I was tired of keeping up appearances with someone like her.
Maddox turned around from the front. “Hey, you’re not planning to ‘accidentally‘ set us up again, are
you?”

Ryder’s face rapidly cycled between pale and flushed, unable to form any explanation.
Cars behind us hanked impatiently.
Byder grimaced as he put the car back in motion.
This time, even his “female bro” stayed silent.
He rushed to drop Maddox off then hurried back to the car to explain: “Phoenix, she got beaten up partly because of what you did. The money wasn’t anything special–just to cover her medical expenses.”
“Because of what I did?” I found this amusing. “Are you saying I forced her to French kiss you and your
budimes?”
Ryder froze, completely speechless.
After a long pause, he finally spoke with difficulty: Running into her today was completely unexpected. Phoenix. I promise, next time I see her. I won’t even acknowledge her, okay?”
I closed my eyes in the back seat, surprisingly calm.
Jest go home.”
