Chapter 9
Ryder spent several days trying to appease me, acting submissive and apologetic.
Eventually, he lost patience and escaped with the excuse of company business.
Late that night, I received a call from the hospital. My husband had apparently “accidentally” driven into the river.
Worth noting: when they pulled him out, he was completely naked.
There was another woman in the car.
And yes, she was also naked.
When I arrived at the hospital, my mother–in–law was already there. She frowned at me. “Phoenix, why are you troubling yourself at this hour?”
I lowered my face. “I need to check on my husband’s condition.”
People immediately started whispering around us:
“The wife is here.”
“Damn, her husband was getting it on with his mistress, and now the poor woman has to come sign
papers.”
My mother–in–law’s expression was grim.
At that moment, a nurse came out to explain the situation–in the freezing weather, both had been
submerged for some time. Ryder was still in emergency care.
As for the woman–she had regained consciousness quickly.
In the hospital room, I found Maddox, her face deathly pale.
When she saw me, she shrank back, her expression defensive.
“I’m warning you–Ryder and I were just playing a game. Don’t come in here causing a scene!”
It was just the two of us in the room. And I was eerily calm.
“Was it worth it?” I mocked.

Maddox’s face suddenly fushed. “What are you talking about? I can’t stand women pox darbing everything into some huge drama.”
I just sat down beside her bed.
“You don’t know, do you? Ryder has HIV.”
Maddox’s expression instantly morphed into terror. She took several deep breaths before shouting “You’re lying! That’s impossible!”
I remained silent, looking at her with pity.
The longer I stared, the more fractured her expression became.
Suddenly, she snapped, grabbing a water glass from the windowsill and hurling it at me. “STOP!! Stop spreading these vicious lies!”
I dodged the attack. The glass shattered on the floor beside my feet.
“Don’t you feel itchy all over?”
She froze, her face contorting.
“Anyone who’s been with him couldn’t escape it.” I continued.
Maddox suddenly shrieked, frantically scratching at her skin beneath the hospital gown.
“You’re lying! How could Ryder have that? He wouldn’t infect me! I don’t have it!”
She scratched until her skin turned bright red.
Then, seemingly struck by a thought, she abruptly calmed down. “If we have it, then you can’t escape
either.”
“And neither can your baby,” she added, a smile playing at the corners of her mouth. “Even if he has it, he’s still my brother. Women like you are so two–faced!”
I clapped my hands and laughed coldly. “Such true brotherhood indeed–free to get naked together.”
Maddox screamed. “We’re not as dirty as you’re making us out to be!”
With that, she grabbed the pillow from her bed and hurled it frantically at me.
At that moment, the hospital room door was pushed open. The pillow hit the doorframe with a dull thud.
“Who called the police?!”

Hearing the voice behind me, I stumbled backward, my eyes welling with tears.
“Officer, I called. She’s attacking me!” I pulled out my phone, which had been recording.
“I’m pregnant, and she’s throwing things at me. My stomach hurts, and I feel dizzy!”
