Chapter 15

Sophia stood frozen, remembering what he had said earlier, her thoughts in chaos.

It couldn’t be what she was thinking… could it?

Caleb seemed to see through her thoughts, his clear eyes fixed intently on her. “Sophia, I like you. I’ve liked you since college. I had everything ready to confess to you, but my family suddenly had problems. When I finished dealing with them and came back, Ethan was already by your side… That was the first time in my life I hesitated, and it made me lose you forever. Fortunately, fate gave me another chance. This time I don’t want to hesitate and miss you again. Sophia, will you give me a chance to pursue you?”

Sophia ultimately refused him-having just ended a failed marriage, she didn’t want to get herself into another mess, and that’s exactly what she told him.

Caleb seemed to have expected her reaction.

He suppressed his disappointment and smiled. “It’s okay. I just wanted to tell you how I feel. You don’t need to feel any pressure. Regardless of whether you accept me in the end, please don’t refuse my help. Rest assured, with me here, I

won’t let Ethan continue bothering you.”

Perhaps it was Caleb’s comfort, or perhaps his determined gaze, but Sophia slept particularly well that night.

Early the next morning, she went out for her usual jog and ran into Caleb downstairs.

Seeing his messy hair, dark circles under his eyes, and the unchanged shirt from yesterday, an absurd thought suddenly struck her. “You didn’t go home last night? You stayed in the car all night?”

Meeting the girl’s clear eyes, Caleb felt a bit uncomfortable and scratched his hair, trying to sound casual. “I was afraid he’d come back to bother you. After all, I worked so hard to nurse you back to health-I can’t let him upset you and undo

all my work, right?”

Sophia pressed her lips together. “Then why didn’t you go upstairs to sleep?”

This house belonged to him anyway, and there were several empty bedrooms.

Caleb paused, a hint of shyness in his eyes as he turned away. “You’re the only one at home…”

He mumbled this sentence, but Sophia immediately understood what he meant.

Although this was Caleb’s house, since she was the only one living there, out of respect for her, he slept in the car.

She couldn’t describe what she felt at that moment-only a gentle warmth slowly flowing through her long-dormant heart,

silently nourishing some place that had long been dry.

Sophia stared at his reddening ears, unconsciously smiling. “Come on, let me treat you to breakfast. Thank you for

staying here last night to protect me.”

They had just walked a short distance when Sophia felt something in her eye, causing tears and discomfort.

Caleb stopped her instinctive move to rub her eye and leaned in to examine it carefully-the next moment, a furious roar
