Chapter 1
The lights in the hospital room flickered, casting shadows that made everything blur together. Through the haze, I saw someone in a white coat rush in frantically.
“Dr. Shaw, OR just called–there’s one slot available. Who goes first?”
I reached out and tugged weakly at the corner of Elias’s coat. He glanced down at me with what looked like annoyance, though I couldn’t see clearly.
From the bed next to mine, Zora started whimpering again. “Elias… I’m not going to be crippled, right? What if it leaves ugly scars…”
And without hesitation, Elias brushed my hand away. “Elara, you’ve just got some cuts on your face and hands–local anesthesia will handle it. Zora’s fracture needs surgery RIGHT NOW! Can you stop making a scene?!”
My head was spinning violently. I watched Elias lean over Zora with gentle concern, not even glancing my way. I opened my mouth weakly, trying to speak.
I wanted to say: Elias, I’m not making a scene. I really can’t remember how Zora got hurt.
I never bullied Zora–why won’t you believe me?
If you really don’t want me anymore, I can leave on my own. I’m not that pathetic.
Elias, just look at me once. Please?
But he was already wheeling Zora out of the room with the medical team.
The gurney wheels echoed through the empty evening corridors, each sound piercing through my ears.
He never looked back.
