Chapter 4
My mom’s call came while Elias was peeling an apple for Zora.
Her voice sounded utterly exhausted through the phone, making my heart break with worry.
“Elias, aren’t you coming to see Elara?”
Elias set down his knife, his tone becoming more respectful.”
“Mrs. Morgan, Zora’s leg is still fractured and I can’t get away right now. You…”
Mom’s voice suddenly turned sharp. “You can’t get away? Do you know Elara was pregnant? She was carrying your
child!”
Elias’s eyes went wide, his grip tightening on the phone. Just as he was about to speak, Mom’s voice broke into sobs.
“Forget it, what’s the point of even talking to you? She’s gone anyway… Elias, you just go ahead and stay with your sweet Zora. Don’t ever contact us again.”
Mom hung up and I was absolutely frantic, desperately wishing I could crawl through that phone to comfort her.
I didn’t know how my body had left the hospital last night, but Mom must be completely devastated.
I pressed against Elias’s phone, trying to call her back, but my hands just passed right through it.
Ghosts don’t have tears.
Mom, please don’t cry. I’m right here, don’t worry.
Elias just stood there, still gripping his phone in shock.
I couldn’t stop myself from throwing punches and kicks at him.
Elias, how can you be so useless? Call my mom back right now!
How is my mom doing? Go check on her!
“What do you mean… gone?”
Elias muttered to himself, then suddenly seemed to snap back to reality. He bolted out of the room and into the doctors‘ office, slamming his hand down in front of the doctor who’d worked on me last night, his voice shaking.
“Dr. Marcus, you were on call last night. Did you handle Elara’s case?”
Dr. Marcus looked up at Elias’s bloodshot eyes, startled. “Dr. Shaw… you…”

“I’m asking if she miscarried!”
Elias’s suddenly raised voice made Dr. Marcus jump. “Dr. Shaw, I’m so sorry for your loss. We didn’t know the patient was pregnant until the very end…”
Elias staggered backward as if all the strength had drained from his body. He suddenly tore off his white coat and headed for the door.
I stayed right beside him, urging him on.
Go faster! Hurry up!
Go see how my mom is doing!
Just as the elevator arrived and I was about to follow Elias inside, he froze in place.
I followed his gaze and saw Zora had somehow crawled out of her room despite her injured leg.
Damn it!
So much for catching that elevator now.
Sure enough, the elevator doors closed and went down while Elias turned back to carry Zora to her bed.
Zora trembled in Elias’s arms, tears streaming down her face.
‘Elias, did something happen to her? I’m so sorry… I saw her buying abortion pills before. It’s all my fault… if my leg hadn’t been broken, I would have told you sooner.”
Zora kept talking, but Elias had gone completely still.
His eyes reddened as he stiffly sat back down beside her bed. He buried his face in his hands, and when he finally poke, his voice was hoarse.
…She didn’t want my baby. It has nothing to do with you.”
watched Elias looking like he was about to break down crying, but all I felt was bitter laughter.
With my medical background, if Elias had used even half a brain cell, he’d know that if I wanted an abortion, I vould’ve chosen a D&C procedure, not abortion pills.
But Elias would always believe every single word that came out of Zora’s mouth.
And that’s exactly why I could never compete with her.
