I finally saw my mom–while Elias was kneeling outside our front door.
Mom looked much better than I’d expected, and my sister Lyra had come home to stay with her.
That was perfect. Now I could finally relax.
Mom had always been soft–hearted, but even after Elias had been kneeling there all afternoon, her attitude hadn’t
softened one bit.
“You could kneel here until you die, and I still wouldn’t let you see Elara.”
Lyra looked at Elias with pure disgust. “Don’t you have your precious Zora to worry about? I heard she broke her leg–why aren’t you with your little princess instead of bothering us?”
‘Elias, you better pray I don’t find out what that woman did to my sister, or I swear I’ll make her pay!”
[ust then, Zora’s call came through.
‘Elias, my leg hurts so much. Can you come check on me? I heard about Sis Elara…”
Lyra snatched the phone. “Who the hell do you think you’re talking about, you son of bitch? Elara only has ONE sister–me! Call her ‘Elara‘ again and I’ll rip your tongue out!”
I reached out to hug Lyra, though my arms passed right through her.
Hey, don’t get worked up over them, sweetie. Your big sister is hanging in there just fine.
Lyra threw the phone back at Elias, and she and Mom turned to go inside.
Elias stayed kneeling for a long time. Since I was stuck following him around, I got impatient waiting for him to
nove and leaned down to check on him.
His face was streaked with tears.
Lora called again, her voice cautious. “Elias… who was that just now? She was so mean…”
Elías didn’t answer Zora’s question. Instead, his voice came out hoarse and broken. “Zora, you tell me the truth. Did Elara really push you down those steps and hurt you on purpose that day?”
Of course not.
Zora’s voice wavered. “Elias, are you doubting me? How could I possibly lie to you…”
Elias hung up without expression.
