Chapter 3
When I got home, Mason was already there.
The room was filled with cigarette smoke–he’d clearly been chain–smoking.
He’s playing the brooding husband now? How ironic.
“So for the past year when you’ve barely been home, you weren’t on business trips–you were out keeping another
woman.”
Mason stared at me with furrowed brows, showing no intention of responding.
I suddenly made a bitter joke: “She looks pretty young. Still in college, I bet. Yet she’s willing to have your baby.”
Though he was clearly waiting for me to bring this up, he remained silent.
My anger flared instantly, and I hurled my purse at him.
“Say something, goddammit!”
The purse hit Mason square in the face.
His composure finally broke.
He jumped to his feet and violently threw my purse against a nearby cabinet, shattering the glass.
“Victoria! I wanted to handle this civilly! Don’t push me!”
His attitude left me completely bewildered.
“So cheating on me is your idea of being civil?”
Mason pulled out his lighter and lit another cigarette.
Apparently, the word “cheating” no longer triggered any shame in him.
“I’ve been meaning to talk to you about this for a while, but never found the right moment. Since you’ve discovered it yourself, it’s an opportunity to settle things amicably.”
“You can have this house if you want. I recognize your contributions to the company’s early days, so I’ll give you a reasonable settlement. But I’m warning you–don’t get greedy.”
His businesslike approach made our marriage seem like just another deal he’d negotiated.
I opened my mouth, my voice coming out hoarse.

Chapter 3
“Money? How much can you possibly give me?”
“I’ve been with you since I was eighteen. You had no family, and I stood by you as you built your empire in this city from nothing”
“We’re thirty now. Do you honestly think you can put a price tag on these twelve years of my life?!”
Mason seemed irritated by my outburst
“What, trying to play on my emotions with ancient history?”
“Yeah, I appreciate you helping with business deals and attending all those dinner parties back then. But we both know how those deals really got closed.”
A chill ran from the soles of my feet up my spine.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
Mason let out a derisive laugh:
“Huh, I’m being generous even offering you money, considering how many times you’ve cheated on me.”
My head was spinning
My first reaction was pure rage.
But that intense anger stupidly led me into a trap of self–justification-
I started mentally reviewing what I might have done to deserve such an accusation.
When he was first starting his business, I went out to secure clients, often attending boozy business dinners.
But I’ve always handled my alcohol well. There was only one time I blacked out, and I was told Mr. Luis, a business partner, drove me home.
And Mason was waiting at our door that night.
I remember him making me lemon water and telling me not to drink so much in the future.
But Mr. Luis remained one of our best business partners afterward.
Was Mason talking about him?
That’s a damn lie! Nothing happened between me and Mr. Luis!”
Mason’s lips curled into a sneer, his eyes full of contempt.
“Maybe not with Luis. But what about Mr. Zane?”

Mr. Zane?
Then I remembered–that sleazy old pervert.
He drugged my drink once at a business dinner.
In my haze, he took me to a hotel room.
When he started pulling off my clothes, I came to my senses.
I begged him to stop, but he got impatient and slapped me hard across the face.
As his alcohol–soaked breath hit my cheek, some survival instinct kicked in.
I pushed him away and somehow managed to grab my phone, snapping several photos of him in his disheveled
state.
I threatened to not only report him for attempted rape but also to release the photos.
He eventually backed down and reluctantly gave us the contract.
I never told Mason about this.
I just put my clothes back on and cried alone in that hotel room for hours.
How could he possibly know about it?
My hesitation seemed to confirm Mason’s suspicions.
‘What’s wrong? Wondering how I found out about your dirty little secrets?”
Mason’s eyes were filled with venom, cruelty, and disgust.
Since you’re so curious, I’ll tell you.”
That drug in your drink? I’m the one who put it there.”
