Chapter 8
Mason had been in such a rush to divorce me.
After forcing me to sign the papers, he immediately transferred the promised $2 million to my account, as if afraid I might ask for more later.
After taking some time to recover, I opened a bakery in the bustling downtown area.
The daily hustle helped me forget many of my troubles.
Every night when I closed up shop, the sweet scent that filled the air brought me a sense of happiness.
Today, as I was pulling down the security gate like usual, I noticed an unusual gaze fixed on me.
Looking in that direction, I could make out a figure in a black suit holding a black umbrella through the misty rain. The umbrella was tilted, hiding most of the man’s face.
But I recognized him immediately.
I pretended not to notice and turned to walk away..
The man panicked and hurried after me.
“Victoria.”
He grabbed my arm, his voice filled with a tenderness that made me sick.
“Let go!”
I tried to shake him off, but Mason’s hand clamped onto my arm like a vise.
The stark contrast between his desperate pursuit now and his eagerness to get rid of me before made me laugh coldly.
“What’s this? Weren’t you saying I’d have to kneel and apologize once the baby was born? Is that why you’re here now? To make me kneel?”
“Victoria…”
“Oh, I forgot. Your scandalous affair was all over TV for days. I heard you got scammed by that couple, right?”
Faced with my mockery, he could no longer stand tall and defend himself.
His voice choked with emotion, “Victoria, I know what you were doing at the hospital. I’m so sorry. I was absolutely horrible.”

With that, he dropped to his knees with a splash, water spraying up from the ground.
His sudden action startled me.
Though there weren’t many people on the street, it was still bizarre.
“What are you doing? Confessing your sins?”
“Oh please, just consider it my selfless contribution. Don’t take it to heart.”
Just as I was about to walk away, he wrapped his arms around my legs.
“Victoria, I’ve filed to withdraw the divorce agreement. Please, can we not get divorced?”
I used all my strength to kick him away.
“Absolutely NOT!”
From that day on, Mason kept showing up outside my bakery.
Sometimes he’d place a large order, claiming it was for his employees.
Other times he’d just brazenly wait for me to finish work.
Of course, I couldn’t let him know my current address, so each time I’d curse and kick until he finally left.
Until one day, it seemed he’d consulted some third–rate online dating guru.
He actually set up heart–shaped candles outside my bakery, standing in the middle holding a bouquet of roses.
Looking at his cheesy attempt at romance, I felt an unexpected wave of nostalgia.
My memory drifted back to when I was eighteen.
Back then, he was poor, even working multiple jobs just to pay his tuition.
The day he confessed his feelings, he bought nine roses from a flower shop that was about to close.
Just like today, he arranged candles below my dormitory and stood in the middle.
‘Victoria!”
He had shouted once, then closed his mouth tightly.
Later he told me that if I hadn’t come out after his first call, he would have packed everything up and run away, afraid of attracting more people and embarrassing me with such a modest confession.
But I heard him the first time.

I immediately poked my head out of the dorm window.
In that instant, I knew what he was doing.
Covering my mouth, surprised and delighted, I ran downstairs and jumped into his arms.
And just like that, we were together.
Now, financially better off, he held a heavy bouquet of roses. The petals were full and fresh.
And he no longer needed to wait until closing time at the flower shop for a discount.
It seemed like a better moment, but it carried less genuine feeling.
He was recycling his old tricks, but time could never be turned back.
I had accepted his pure heart at eighteen.
But at thirty, his heart was no longer pure–why bother with this charade?
Curious onlookers stopped to watch the scene unfold.
He looked gratefully at the crowd around him, then turned to me with tears in his eyes and said sincerely:
“Victoria, can you forgive me?”
