The day Camden actually came back, Kieran arranged a family dinner.
I deliberately asked Kieran.
“Big brother, Camden’s been back for days now. Why are you just arranging a family dinner today?”
Kieran looked at me for a long time without saying anything?
His eyes were as deep as a bottomless pool.
.
They seemed capable of swallowing a person whole with their unpredictability.
I shrank back and ran off to find Camden.
I didn’t look back.
But I could always feel Kieran’s gaze following me.
At the family dinner that evening, Camden seemed to be in a bad mood.
Maybe the business trip hadn’t gone too well.
When he reached for his third glass, I gently pressed down on his wine glass.
“Big brother, drink less. Your stomach’s not good.”
Before I’d even finished speaking, two gazes suddenly fell on my face.
Kieran always had impeccable manners.
Even at family dinners, he wore formal attire and sat up straight.
But at this moment, his knife and fork suddenly clattered against the porcelain plate.
At the sound, he looked up at me.
Camden also frowned: “What did you call me?”
My eyes widened slightly, with both shyness and sweetness in them: “Big brother, what’s wrong?”
“Harper!”
Camden suddenly stood up and swept the plate in front of him off the table.
I was so scared I covered my head, my eyes already brimming with tears: “Camden…”
“Who the hell are you calling big brother? What have you been doing behind my back?”
He grabbed my collar and nearly lifted me up entirely.
I trembled all over with fear: “You said it yourself, that you liked me calling you that.”
“You’re fucking lying!”
Camden’s eyes were bloodshot as he stared at me with murderous intent: “When did I ever say…”
His voice suddenly stopped.
The hand gripping my collar showed veins bulging on the back.
My tears kept falling as I sobbed with grievance.
“You said it yourself, that you liked me calling you big brother.”
“And you told me to keep calling you that lately…”
Camden’s bloodshot eyes suddenly turned to look at Kieran across from him.
And the man who had been sitting there immovable as a mountain slowly put down his knife and fork.
He stood up, his imposing presence sending chills down one’s spine.
My crying suddenly quieted down.
An indescribable terror invaded my entire body.
Maybe Kieran’s external facade had deceived me.
He was actually more terrifying than Camden.
I began trembling uncontrollably.
Kieran’s gaze fell on me for only a brief two seconds.
But my entire back was soaked with sweat.
“Don’t bully a girl.”
He reached out and gripped Camden’s wrist, making him let go.
“Come upstairs with me. We need to talk.”
Camden clenched his jaw tightly.
After a long while, he let out a cold, mocking laugh.
Still staring at me with red eyes for a long time before turning to go upstairs.
When the study door closed, I received a message on my phone.
It was from Kieran.
Just five words.
“Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
I stared at those words.
I wiped away my tears and slowly sat down in the chair.
But then I covered my face and laughed mockingly at myself.
Did Kieran think I didn’t know at all?
Or did he think I wouldn’t remember?
At the banquet the day he returned to the country, someone had congratulated him on his upcoming engagement.
He hadn’t denied it.
And a man about to get engaged playing this kind of game with his twin brother was probably just seeking one last thrill before marriage.
Or satisfying some dark pleasure hidden beneath his perfect exterior.
But how innocent was I in all this?
Why should I have to be a plaything for these two brothers?
