Chapter 16
Natalie froze.
When she heard footsteps coming up from behind her, she instinctively tried to move away, so flustered th
she didn’t even take the time to figure out which direction she was going.
Moments later, a powerful force yanked her body back
A speeding car brushed right past her. Natalie’s mind went blank. Her face was pale, covered in a sheen of cold
sweat as she stood on the spot, still shaken.
“Natalie Spencer, have you lost your mind? You can’t just charge around like this. You’ll kill yourself
The speaker was none other than Xavier, Natalie’s first boyfriend and ex–fiancé.
Without thinking, Natalie shook off his hold.
It had been three years since Xavier last spoke to her. Even though he occasionally went for dinner with the
Spencers, they had never interacted with each other after Natalie married Jason.
Natalie didn’t have any lingering feelings toward Xavier, but she couldn’t exactly dismiss him as a complete
stranger, either. Keeping her distance was the best she could do.
Taking a step back, she said in a distant yet polite tone, “Thank you, Mr. Steiner.”
After speaking, she moved to find a safe place to wait for her ride.
However, Xavier did not show any signs of leaving. He put his hands in his pockets and stood beside her. Natalie
couldn’t see his face, so she couldn’t gauge what he was trying to do.
Suddenly, Xavier scoffed. “I thought you were doing well, Natalie. Did you know your husband left you by the
side of the road so callously just to go meet Sienna? Haven’t you ever wondered why Jason would marry a blind
woman like you back then?”
His words sent a chill down Natalie’s spine
Even Xavier could see that Jason had married her with ulterior motives. Did that mean everyone knew the truth
except her? Had she been played like a fool all this time?
No wonder the Spencers dared to bully her right in front of Jason. No wonder Xavier had called her the stupidest
woman in the world when he found out that she was marrying Jason
There had been clues all along. She had just been too stupid to see them.
Though Xavier mocked her without mercy, he couldn’t deny that Natalie was still tragically beautiful. Thes
years had made her more graceful, stirring up his desire.
He wanted to claim her, like a prize.
Just as Xavier was about to voice that out, Natalie suddenly turned to him. “If you have time to mock ine here,
Mr. Steiner, why not mind your own business? Why is your wife spending her birthday with another man
instead of with you, her husband?”
Xavier’s expression darkened. “Natalie, I was just giving you a kind reminder,” he growled. “Don’t be
ungrateful”
Natalie’s long hair fluttered slightly in the breeze as she mocked, “Mr. Steiner, you’re just as much a cuckold as
I am. Am I wrong?”
Xavier lost his temper and glared viciously at her. “You’re still as venomous as ever, Natalie Spencer. Nothing
has changed in three years. No wonder no one likes you–even your own husband despises you. You deserve it!”
He felt ridiculous for having entertained his thoughts of desire earlier. In fact, he shouldn’t have stepped in
earlier–she could get hit by a car and die for all he cared.
He couldn’t accept that a woman he had scorned had challenged his fragile masculinity. Furious, he flicked his
eyes toward Natalie’s cane and smiled sinisterly.
Without warning, he grabbed the cane and tossed it carelessly into the bushes on the sidewalk.
Natalie panicked when she realized that her cane was gone.
In an unfamiliar environment, her cane was her eyes. She was already uneasy after having narrowly avoided a
car accident. So, the loss of her cane made her even more frantic. “Give it back! Xavier, give me back my cane.
