Isabelle wasn’t the type to be easily bullied, and she quickly fired back with a few sharp words.
The office turned chaotic again for a moment, but Rosalie wasn’t in the mood to listen to their bickering. Her mind was completely occupied with the fact that Thomas had appointed her as his intern assistant.
She still couldn’t figure out how it ended up falling on her shoulders!
If it was about connections, Lydia was the obvious choice. If the selection had been based on results, Regina had always been the top performer among the four of them. So, how did it end up being her?
It really didn’t make sense.
Rosalie couldn’t help but think more about it but quickly stopped herself from going down that terrifying train of thought.
Could it be … he had done this on purpose? He already had a fiancée, and their relationship was so close! Plus, he seemed to be distancing himself from her. So, how could it be?
But in the end, Rosalie mustered up the courage to go to Thomas’s office.
She stood outside the door, taking several deep breaths to steady herself before finally gathering the courage to knock on his office door.
“Come in!”
Thomas’s deep voice faintly drifted through the wooden door.
Rosalie took a quiet breath before pushing the door open and stepping inside.
He sat at the desk in a dark suit, his head lowered as he focused on flipping through the pathology documents in his hands.
His long fingers gently turned the thin pages. Under the contrast of the white fingertips looked even fairer, giving off an unexpectedly soothing feeling.

“Is something wrong?”
Thomas didn’t look up but spoke softly.
Rosalie quickly snapped out of her daze, her face momentarily awkward, but she regained her composure the next second. “Dr. Lange, I wanted to ask about the selection of your intern assistant. I just heard that you chose me in the end?”
“Any objections?”
Thomas set the documents down and looked up at her.
Rosalie awkwardly pressed her lips together, hesitating momentarily before asking, “Why me? In terms of performance, I thought Dr. Miller would have been the most suitable choice. If it’s about connections, I shouldn’t be the one. So did I get chosen in the end?”
Thomas’s profound gaze lingered on her, his expression half–smiling, half–amused.
After a long pause, he spoke in a low voice, “Dr. Hawthorne, were you hoping for a specific reason? Do you want me to praise your work skills, or would you rather hear that I chose you because of… the special connection we shared?”
Rosalie couldn’t help but feel her ears heat up.
She hadn’t expected him to speak so bluntly.
Feeling slightly uncomfortable, she pressed her lips together, then spoke again, “Dr. Lange, that’s not what I meant. I just think … you could consider choosing someone else for the assistant role.”
“Why?”
Thomas locked eyes with her. “Give me a reason that will convince me!”
“I’m worried I won’t be able to handle such an important job.”
That was all she could come up with.
