Chapter 5
Although Davin and I were in a contract marriage, both families placed great importance on the wedding. I had been so busy preparing for it that I hardly had time to rest.
While trying on wedding dresses, my phone rang from the couch. Davin happened to be sitting there, so I simply asked him, “Davin, can you answer the phone for me?”
A few seconds passed, but the phone continued ringing.

I pushed aside the curtain and walked over in confusion. “Why aren’t you answering it?”
He held up the phone, his tone filled with barely contained irritation.
“It’s Tanner. How could I answer it?”
I was caught off guard for a moment, then went to take the phone. I answered the call and put it on speakerphone.
“Have you reflected on your mistake?”
Tanner’s voice came immediately.
I scoffed. “What mistake? Tanner, are you crazy?”
Tanner let out a heavy sigh and said impatiently, “Enough with the games. I won’t hold it
you for running off and leaving my mom behind. She’s in the hospital now and has
take care of her. You need to come back right now and look after her.”
ed the phone tightly, wishing I could somehow cross the distance and slap him.
was frowning the entire time. He approached, pulled me into his arms, and
tionally spoke in an affectionate tone. “Kathy, it’s time to change.”
aring a strange man’s voice on the line, Tanner exploded.
“Katherine! Where are you? What are you doing?”

I looked at Davin and smiled. I raised my tone with a hint of amusement as I responded, “I’m trying on my wedding dress. I’m getting married next week.”
“I don’t believe it!” Tanner blurted.
I was about to speak again when I heard Willow’s voice from his end.
“Tanner, hurry and help me pull the zip up. It’s stuck.”
Tanner snapped at her to be quiet, then sarcastically said to me, “Getting married? Who are you kidding? Are you marrying a ghost? Are you expecting me to congratulate you on your wedding?”
I glanced at Davin. Noticing the dark expression on his face, I felt my heart drop as I hurriedly said, “Thanks for your well wishes.” I hung up immediately after.
“Davin, don’t be mad.”
I wrapped my arms around his and tried to coax him softly.
He stared at me intently. A faint blush spread across his face, but he still stubbornly muttered, “You still have your ex’s number saved?”
I blinked at him and held up my phone to show him. “I’ll delete it right away!”
By the time I calmed Davin down, Tanner was staring blankly at his phone.
An overwhelming sense of unease washed over him. I had never hung up on him before.
After making up his mind, he dialed my number again, only to hear the busy signal. That meant only one thing. His number had been blocked!
