The next time I saw Tanner was at the entrance of a party. He looked tired, his eyes
bloodshot, and his clothes were wrinkled. He was nothing like the confident, sharp person I
used to know.
When he saw me, he eagerly walked up to me.
“Kathy, I’ve finally found you.”
I stepped back to avoid his touch.
This was an invitation–only event, and I had no idea how Tanner had gotten news about it.
His smile faltered for a moment before it softened.
“I haven’t heard from you these past few days. I’ve missed you so much.”
“Mr. Clarkson, please mind your words. There are reporters here,” I said, deadpan.
Tanner’s expression was filled with disbelief and hurt. His voice turned hoarse as he asked, “What did you call me? Kathy, you’ve never called me that or stopped contacting me for so long. And now you’re being so cold toward me.
“Why did you block my number? Do you know how hard it was for me to find you? The company needs you, and so does my family. Come back home with me, Kathy.”
Then, he opened his arms to welcome me into them.
I couldn’t help but chuckle bitterly and look at him with disdain.
“Home? Tanner, have you forgotten that we broke up?”
“We broke up?” Tanner mumbled the words as if he had never heard them before.
“When did we break up?! I don’t remember that. I just wanted you to reflect on yourself. When did I ever say we’re breaking up? Kathy, are you mad at me? I’ll fire Willow and make

her apologize to you on her knees. Then we can go back and get married.”
As Tanner spoke, he grabbed my hand and tried to pull me toward the car.
Amid the struggle, a fist suddenly flew past my ear and slammed into Tanner’s face.
“Let go of her!”
I didn’t need to look back to know it was Davin.

After pulling myself away, I hid behind Davin and looked at Tanner as though he were a
lunatic.
Tanner wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth with his thumb, then looked up with
fury in his eyes. However, his expression cracked when he saw Davin.
“Mr. Slade?”
Davin ignored him. He held my hand and looked me over. “Are you hurt?”
I shook my head.
Meanwhile, Tanner was already back on his feet and staring at us in shock.
“Kathy, how do you two know each other?”
Davin pulled me into his arms and threw Tanner a dissatisfied look. “You’ve harassed my fiancée.”
Tanner looked like he had been struck by lightning. Pointing at us, he stuttered, “Y- You’re… You’re saying Katherine is your fiancée? This has to be a lie. You’re both tricking
me.”
At that moment, the host of the party came out to greet Davin.
“Mr. Slade, Ms. Leigh, welcome. Please, come inside.”
Tanner approached to speak again, but security personnel blocked him. His face turned
ashen as he stood there and watched us walk
away.
