Chapter 7
Before even entering the house, I heard the scene of my parents–in–law hysterically begging the doctor. As soon as I entered the door, I saw the two elderly people kneeling on the ground with tears streaming down their faces. They begged the doctor, while Damien and Jessica n lay naked on the bed.
A rusty rebar pierced through both of their chests. They looked like they were on the brink
of death.
The doctor asked, “Excuse me, Old Lady. What is the relationship between these two? We need to register it.”
Anselma’s expression shifted for a moment. And her gaze lingered on me for a moment with guilt.
Finally, she said decisively, “They are husband and wife!”
I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. Sure enough, birds of a feather flock together. They all liked to lie with their eyes wide open.
“You can’t lie about this.”
The doctor frowned and looked at the two people who were bleeding. He warned, “Their condition is very dangerous now. Only one of them may survive. If they’re in another kind of relationship, you have to explain it to us. You can’t make decisions for others.”
“Well… they’ve always had a good relationship. You don’t have to worry.”
Anselma evaded the question with vague words. When the doctor kicked us out, Anselma grabbed my wrist specifically.
“Eugenia.”
She pressed me onto the chair and pleaded earnestly, “Now that it’s happened, it is more important to save lives first. We have raised you to this age. You should be more sensible.”
I turned my head and smiled at Anselma. “Alright, Mom. I will definitely not make trouble.” The long speech that Anselma had prepared was suddenly choked in her throat by my good temper.
She awkwardly said, “It’s good that you are sensible.”
The two of them stayed in the intensive care unit for three whole days, with three critical condition notices issued.
Meanwhile, I was rushing to contact media outlets and influencers across the country
non–stop.
“Even in the midst of an earthquake, some people still can’t resist their desires.”
I had already come up with names for them. Jessica was brought out and had already been taken off life support. She was no longer in danger of life.
Aside from having both legs amputated, her condition wasn’t too bad. She applied a thick foundation and cried in front of the camera.
“Hello everyone, the person lying inside there is my lover.”
Under the sympathetic gazes of the crowd, her tears kept falling.
“In the last moments when the aftershock came, Damien protected me with his body. If it weren’t for him, it would be me lying in the emergency room right now,”
As she spoke, Jessica looked through the crowd and cast a warning look at me accurately. A few friends who knew the truth turned red with embarrassment. But in the end, no one dared to speak up.
Who would dare to stir up trouble? It would definitely be broadcast to the entire nation. They couldn’t afford to lose face like that.
At that moment, a social media influencer noticed me. She pointed the camera in front of
- me.
“Hello, I see you’ve been by their side the whole time. What is your relationship with them?”
“The one lying inside is my husband.”
I looked at Jessica with a half–smile. Jessica immediately pinched my arm hard in front of
us, where no one could see.
She needed this identity to raise funds for herself. If anyone discovered that the two of them were a pair of adulterers, everything would be ruined.
Anselma leaned close to my ear and threatened, “Damien is in the emergency room now. He is fighting for his life. Don’t cause any trouble!”
“Otherwise, I won’t return a single penny of your parents‘ compensation to you.”
They had used the excuse that I was a minor to withhold the compensation. Even after I got married, they still refused to give it back.
It was clear they had no intention to give it back to me. Now they were threatening me, just to keep me in check for the time being.
The journalists were confused by this little incident. Their cameras wandered around me, Anselma and Jessica. Jessica quickly tried to smooth things over.
“I’m sorry. My sister just lost her husband, so she’s a bit off her rocker right now.”
