Chapter 7
Ryan and Kayla froze like deer in headlights when they heard the crowd. Kayla jabbed a finger at me: “You little tramp–you landed the richest guy in town?!”
Zane shot a look, and his bodyguard clamped a hand on Kayla’s neck. “Keep trashing my wife, and my lawyers will sue you for defamation. I won’t let this slide.”
Kayla gulped, shutting up. Zane crossed to me, lifting me up and shielding me like a fortress. He faced the crowd: “This is my wife, Alia Morgan–not some mistress. We’re legally married, and today’s our wedding. You bought her lies and attacked my wife–you owe her an apology.”
His guards lined up behind the crowd, making it clear they weren’t leaving till they apologized. The same people who’d called me a home–wrecker suddenly turned syrupy.
“Sorry, ma’am–we got played.”
“Totally! That woman brainwashed us–we had no idea.”
“You and Mr. Sterling make a stunning couple. Forgive us, please.”
Their angry stares shifted to Kayla, who hid behind Ryan. “They chose to attack her! Don’t blame me! Ask her–her son’s Ryan’s kid, so she is a mistress!”
I answered flatly: “I have no son. Not anymore.”
He’s dead.
Kayla scoffed: “Playing dumb to marry a billionaire? Your son would disown you if he heard that!”
“Enough,” Zane cut in. “You’re here for a wedding, right? Instead of yelling, maybe head to the junior ballroom before it fills up.”
Kayla huffed: “So what if you’re in the main ballroom? We can afford the junior one! I’m here to marry*, not just
eat.”
Zane and I exchanged a look. “Kayla, didn’t you know? The junior ballroom’s hosting a group wedding today. Thirty couples are queuing up–you’ll need to grab a spot.”
She shrieked: “Bullshit! Ryan, tell them they’re lying! Sue them for slander!”
Ryan looked sheepish. Before he could speak, a flood of couples in wedding attire filed into the junior ballroom. He patted Kayla’s arm: “You wanted this venue, but it was booked. You were in a rush, so 1-”
Kayla flung his hand off. “I wanted a fancy wedding! Not a group deal! Fix this–kick them out!”

I laughed: “Kick them out? You’re at a government–funded charity wedding, Kayla.”
“You spent nothing?!” She ripped off her veil, ready to storm out, but Ryan just shrugged: “Leave if you want. We’re married now–who else would you marry?”
His true colors showed, and even I felt a chill. My husband of years was this heartless? Kayla hadn’t expected this either, starting to bawl.
Just then, cops walked in. “Who called 911?”
Kayla hesitated, but I pointed at her: “She did. She’s accusing me of being a mistress, but I’m here for my own wedding–with a valid license.”
Officer Kate did a double–take. “You!”
I recognized him too–he’d handled my son’s hit–and–run case.
