Chapter 14 If You’re Using Beauty as a Weapon, Maybe Don’t Broadcast It
“Kyle, what are you looking at?”
Mia Jones tugged lightly at Kyle’s sleeve when she noticed him zoning out.
His view was now blocked by a row of trees. He could no longer see what was happening on the other side. Kyle withdrew his gaze and said flatly, “Nothing.”
But his thoughts were far from settled.
Candice followed behind.
Charlie was on a call, standing by a tall tree. He turned and glanced back at her. Realizing he was on the phone, Candice
quickly stopped walking and took cover under a mushroom–shaped pavilion nearby.
She rubbed her forehead, inwardly cursing herself for being so reckless. Seriously, what am I even doing?
When Charlie finally ended his call, Candice stepped forward with a self–deprecating smile, trying to play it cool.
“Mr. Clemens, you clearly have sharp instincts. I can’t even read the room properly–definitely not secretary material.
Sorry to have bothered you.”
“You followed me all the way here… just to tell me that you’re unqualified?” Charlie raised an eyebrow, amused.
There was just no winning with this man. His tongue was sharper than a blade.
Candice gave an awkward laugh. Since it was clear she had no chance at this job, she stopped pretending and went
straight to the point.
“Fine, I came to fight for a shot. But I get it–our last meeting was a disaster, and today I made a complete fool of
myself. I’m not exactly impressing you here, so I figured I’d bow out gracefully before things got worse.
Charlie’s gaze turned cold, “You really think I rejected you because of that?”
Candice blinked. “What else, then?”
“You show up dressed like this, asking to be my secretary. If I hired you, wouldn’t people think I’m just a man who hires
based on looks?”

His voice dropped as he leaned a little closer, his tone carrying a lazy undertone. “And even if I did hire for looks… I
wouldn’t make it that obvious, would I?”

Candice’s cheeks flamed instantly, the blush spreading down her neck and ears. Her whole face was practically glowing.
He wasn’t just rejecting her—he was mocking her. Tearing down her last shred of dignity, hinting that she was trying to
sleep her way into a job… and that he wasn’t buying it.
Candice didn’t even try to argue. She couldn’t. She just wanted to disappear.
With as much composure as she could gather, she gave a stiff nod. “Thank you for the… enlightenment. I’ll take my
leave. Goodbye.”
She didn’t wait for a response and turned to walk out of the woods, practically fleeing.
Back on the green, Bianca and Mr. Emerson returned to find Charlie standing alone.
“Where’s Candice?” Bianca asked, puzzled.
“She left,” Charlie replied casually.
“Huh?” Bianca was surprised. Just minutes ago, things seemed to be going well. She tried to salvage the situation, “Mr.
Clemens, Candice is actually really capable”
“Doesn’t look like it,” Charlie cut in.
Bianca was sharp enough to instantly grasp the issue with those five words.
thought she understood men–believing they were all suckers for beauty. But Charlie… turned out to be a monk in
- se.
no… this is totally my fault,” she quickly explained, “She didn’t come dressed like that, I swear. I made her change into what I brought because I thought her outfit was too dull.”

Charlie didn’t respond, but the look on his face was all she needed to see.
Back home, Candice changed out of her outfit and slumped in front of her vanity.

Was this who she’d become, now that she’d left Aureate Group and Kyle? A nobody?
She stayed there in silence for a while, letting her emotions cool. Then she picked up her phone to call Bianca and apologize. She’d put it on silent earlier to avoid interruptions.
When she turned it back on, dozens of missed calls flooded in.
Kyle.
Bianca.
The former she ignored completely. She dialed Bianca instead. “Sorry, sorry, I wasn’t feeling great–low blood sugar. I
just went home and forgot to tell you.”
Bianca was silent for a few seconds before quietly saying, “…I should be the one apologizing.”
Smart girls didn’t need many words.
“It’s okay. I just wanted to try anyway. You’ve done more than enough for me–I’ll always be grateful.”
“Don’t be so formal with me! Anyway, I explained the whole outfit thing to Charlie. He didn’t say much, but I got his
contact from Mr. Emerson. Want to give it one more shot?”
Candice thought for a few seconds… then shook her head. “No. He and I aren’t meant to be.”
Bianca didn’t press further.
Candice curled into bed, exhaustion hitting her harder than she expected. When your heart is worn out, your body
follows.
Just as she was drifting off, she heard the door open.
“…Hmm?” She turned over groggily–only to find Kyle standing by her bed, his face stormy and unreadable.
Candice didn’t want to deal with him. She turned away and pulled the covers over her head.
“You’ve been home all day? Didn’t go out?” Kyle sat down on the edge of her bed, his tone probing.
Candice said nothing.
“I saw someone at the golf course today. Her silhouette looked… a lot like yours.”

Her eyes flew open.
He was there, too?!

What a joke. He and Mia Jones had basically shoved their relationship in her face, and now he thought he had the right to
question her?
She wanted to say so what if I was there? But she worried he might go after Bianca, so she stayed silent.
Kyle leaned in, pulling the blanket down slightly to look at her pale neck. He didn’t see any suspicious marks, and his
expression softened slightly.
But he still needed to hear it from her. “Did you go out today or not?”
“I stayed home all afternoon. Cleaned the garden. Now I want to sleep. Can you not?”
Annoyed, she yanked the covers back over her head.
Kyle studied her for a second. She didn’t seem like she was lying. He gave up.
Night fell.
In the penthouse, Charlie was having dinner alone.
Jim, his longtime housekeeper–slash–driver–slash–everything, poured wine into a glass beside him.
“Any word from the headhunters?” Charlie asked after sipping the red.
“Jerry sent over a new candidate list just now. Said to have a look when you get a moment.”
Jim paused, like he just remembered something interesting. “By the way, that Ms. Hale–the one you met after I rear- ended her–she’s on the list too.”
“Oh?” Charlie set his glass down. “Bring me the tablet.”
His tone was still calm, but Jim, who had been serving him for over twenty years, knew this was as close to ‘interest‘ as it got.
He fetched the tablet from the study and handed it over.
Charlie began scrolling through the list.
He’d rejected multiple rounds of candidates already.

What he wanted was clear: someone with real leadership, presence, excellent communication skills, and the ability to
navigate between departments and clients–a true chief secretary.
Jim leaned in slightly, as if chatting, “Young as she may seem, Ms. Hale is quite impressive. In just four years at Aureate
Group, she rose from a regular staffer to project manager. Half of Aureate Group’s success in recent years was because of
her. Everyone in the industry wanted to poach her–but Kyle, Aureate Group’s CEO, was her boyfriend. Rumor is, he’s
about to marry the Jones family’s fourth daughter. So, Ms. Hale resigned in fury. Poor girl… she’s sharp, but a little too
emotional.”
