He laughed hysterically. “I’m mentally ill! So
what if it’s against the law?”
“I could sleep with you, even kill you, and
nothing would happen!”
His legal awareness was pretty weak. No
matter what I said, he wouldn’t believe me.
“I’ve been begging you, and you’re still not
happy.
Summer Lane, you’re such a bitch.
“”
“You were always clinging to me when I
treated you like crap, I guess I shouldn’t have
been so nice to you!”
The drug was still working, and I was too
weak to fight back.
“Riiiip-”
“Bang!”
Carter tore my clothes open.
The front door was kicked open.
I looked up, hoping it was Jason.
But it was Bethany.
Her skin was covered in bruises. She’d had a
rough time.
She ran over and hugged Carter, crying,
“Please, don’t do this. It’s against the law!”
Carter shoved her away. “Get out!”
But Bethany was determined to stop him. She
grabbed his leg.
I took a deep breath and tried to reason with
him.
But Carter was too far gone.
Bethany pulled a piece of paper out of her
pocket and tried to hand it to Carter.
“Certer
“Carter, calm down. I’m…”
Before she could finish, Carter smashed her
in the head with a vase.
“Shut up, bitch! You don’t get to tell me what
to do!”
The paper fluttered to the ground.
Carter kicked Bethany, who slumped to the
ground.

He was about to keep doing what he was
doing to me when the police burst into the
room.
“Stop! Don’t resist!”
Jason ran to me, untying me and hugging me
tightly.
He started crying, burying his face in my
shoulder.
“I’m sorry, Summer. It’s my fault.”
I patted his head, comforting him. “Don’t
worry, I’m okay.”
The drug was starting to wear off.
The police restrained Carter and began to
search the house.
Bethany was gone.
One of the female officers picked up the

“She’s been pregnant for three weeks…”
Carter screamed. “That’s not possible!”
“How could she be pregnant?!”
He couldn’t believe he’d killed Bethany and
his child.
He suddenly broke free of the police.
“Bethany? Tell me it’s not true!”
“Open your eyes. Open your eyes, Bethany!”
Carter shook Bethany’s body.
Soon, he saw the blood coming from between
her legs.
He broke down completely, his mental illness
reaching a new level.
Carter’s parents came to see him, crying.
Carter was in the psych ward, hugging a table
leg.
Sometimes, he called out for Summer. Other
times, he called out for Bethany.
