Chapter 5

From afternoon until evening, Colton stayed holed up in his study without coming out once.

I sent Daisy a message, planning to secretly drive over and pick her up, telling her to have her ID photos ready in advance.

Through the crack in the study door, I could see Colton, who had been in meetings for three straight hours.

I had to admit, his stamina was remarkably good in every aspect.

Seeing that his meeting wouldn’t be ending anytime soon, I quietly grabbed the car keys and headed straight for Daisy’s place.

This

sports car was something Colton bought for me, but I barely got to drive it a few times throughout the year.

Now it was becoming my tool for mischief.

If Colton found out, I’d probably never be allowed to touch this car again.

At that thought, my heart ached with reluctance.

But no matter how expensive the car was, it couldn’t compare to

Daisy’s importance.

Gritting my teeth, I floored the gas pedal.

In less than fifteen minutes, I arrived at the entrance to Daisy’s apartment complex.

Marcus had been keeping watch over Daisy, unwilling to leave.

But when dinnertime came, he received what seemed like an extremely urgent phone call and hurried off.

This was exactly the rare opportunity we’d been waiting for.

After waiting about a minute, I saw Daisy bundled up completely, not showing even an inch of skin, moving around like she was up to no good.

The moment she got in the car, she let out a long sigh of relief. “Vanessa, let’s get out of here before anyone notices.”

Before I could even start the car, my phone rang.

Seeing the caller ID, my heart rate immediately spiked.

The caller was my newlywed husband, Colton.

He said coldly, “Vanessa James…”

Whenever Colton called me by my full name, it usually meant he was about to blow up.

No way-this opportunity was too precious. I had to help Daisy

escape.

Mustering my courage, before Colton could finish speaking, I hung up on him.

This was probably the first time since he took over the Hoffman family that anyone had dared to hang up on him.

At that thought, I couldn’t help but shudder.

The airport was in the suburbs. Even driving at top speed, it took over an hour to get from downtown to the airport.

Daisy’s flight was about to begin boarding.

I asked, “Daisy, are you sure about this?”

She pulled off her mask and threw her arms around me. “I’m sure. Rather than staying by Marcus’s side to be humiliated and have my dignity trampled on, I’d rather live freely on my own.

“Vanessa, you need to be happy too. If Colton ever bullies you, you must find a way to come find me.”

With boarding time approaching, I pressed a bank card into

Daisy’s hand. “This is money I saved up before. Take this card for emergencies.”

Just as we were tearfully saying goodbye, Marcus suddenly appeared and grabbed Daisy’s suitcase.

He asked, “Daisy, where are you going? Leaving the country without even telling me?”

He still had that careless attitude that made people furious.

Just as I was about to stand up for Daisy, I sensed someone slowly approaching from behind.

Catching that familiar cologne scent, I didn’t need to turn around to know-Colton had arrived.

Daisy and I exchanged glances, both understanding that our plan had failed once again.

Traffic was sparse on the elevated highway. Colton drove in silence, his coldness so intimidating that I couldn’t help but

shiver.

He suddenly pulled the car over into the emergency lane.

I stared at the endless road ahead, not daring to speak.

I was afraid that if I said anything, he might throw me right off

the overpass. Better to keep a low profile and minimize my

presence.

Colton said, “I told you so much last night, and you still want to

run?”
