Chapter 2
Leaving the hospital, Avery returned home.
As soon as she opened the door, a white blur lunged toward her.
Sugar, the stray dog she and Reed had rescued five years ago, circled her ankles, wagging his tail happily.
Avery smiled, about to pet him, when she looked up and her smile instantly froze.

Reed and Victoria were standing in the middle of the living room.

Victoria cowered behind Reed, acting frightened.

Reed frowned slightly, then nodded to his security.
The guard immediately stepped forward to search Avery, afraid she might have something that could harm Victoria.
Reed once said Avery was his most precious treasure and wouldn’t let anyone touch her. But now he was allowing security to search her, all to protect another woman.
Avery submitted to the search, her heart numb with pain.
“The divorce agreement says the house is yours,” Reed pointed upstairs. “I came back to get some things, then I’ll leave.”
He turned and went upstairs. Sugar hesitated for a moment before following him with small steps, probably confused why his male owner hadn’t been home lately.
In the living room, Victoria’s harmless expression instantly vanished. Her gaze fell on the jade bracelet on Avery’s wrist.
“You’ve signed the divorce papers, so why don’t you return Reed’s family heirloom? After all, we’re getting married in a week.”
Avery looked down at the bracelet on her wrist.
She still remembered Reed’s love and reverence when he put it on her.
“Avery, this is the symbol of a Bennett bride-for life, inseparable.”
Yet now he was willing to fake amnesia and divorce her for Victoria.
There was no love anymore; keeping this bracelet was just a joke.
Avery removed the bracelet and handed it over.
Victoria seemed surprised by how easily she gave in, especially since just yesterday Avery had still been trying to help Reed “regain his memory.”
She took the bracelet, “Avery, whatever you’re planning, Reed will only belong to me from now on.”
As she finished speaking, she raised her hand and violently smashed the bracelet.

When Avery gasped in shock, Victoria quickly slipped a piece of the broken bracelet into her hand and screamed.
“Ah! Reed, help me!”
The piercing scream shattered the silence in the house.
Avery tried to pull away, but Victoria gripped her wrist fiercely, her nails digging into Avery’s flesh.
“Woof!”
A white blur rushed down faster than Reed.
Sugar bared his teeth and lunged at Victoria, sinking his teeth into her calf.
Victoria screamed in pain, yanking Avery’s hand. The shard sliced across her cheek, leaving a shallow cut.
She screamed again and released Avery, falling to the ground.
Reed, who had rushed downstairs at the sound, saw only this scene.
He rushed over and violently pushed Avery away.
Avery fell to the floor, the bracelet shard cutting into her palm. Blood immediately welled up.
Reed kicked Sugar away as he was still biting Victoria’s leg.
“Yowl!”
Sugar rolled to the side, whimpering in pain, confused why the male owner who had always protected him would treat him this way.
“Victoria, are you okay? Don’t be scared, I’ll take you to the hospital right away.”
Reed anxiously lifted Victoria and hurried out, never once looking back at Avery.
Avery curled into a ball on the floor.
She remembered when she once had her period, Reed had flown back overnight from an international meeting just to make her ginger tea and rub her belly.
When she’d cut her finger, even slightly, his eyes would well up with concern.
And that time she was injured by the mad bull, he’d practically turned the city upside down, bringing in specialist after specialist.
Because she’d been injured saving him, Reed had even yelled at her for the first time.
Afterward, he’d held her tight and cried like a child, saying:
“Avery, I’d give my life for you, but you can’t get hurt. Without you, I’d rather be dead.”
Would he really rather be dead without her?

Tears fell one after another.
“Whimper…”
Sugar whined, crawling to her side, gently licking the tears from her face.
Avery hugged Sugar, burying her face in his warm fur.
“Sugar, I’m not hurt, really, not at all…”
Her voice broke as she held Sugar and sobbed uncontrollably.
Sugar nuzzled her face with his big head, whimpering softly, as if trying to comfort her.
What would happen to her Sugar when she was gone…
