Chapter 12
After Vincent woke up, Mrs. Blackstone nearly got down on her knees before Raelyn, wanting to adopt her as her goddaughter on the
spot.
It was Mr. Blackstone who remained rational and calmed his excited wife:
“Raelyn just married Vincent. Wouldn’t it be strange to adopt her as your goddaughter?”
“I think we should see what the two of them want.”
“You’re right, you’re right. I’m so confused. Raelyn, you must be exhausted after such a long day. Let me show you to your room so you can rest a bit.”
Raelyn nodded with a smile.
She had assumed Mrs. Blackstone meant a guest room.
But as they walked, she realized Mrs. Blackstone was leading her to the best room in the entire villa.
It was even nicer and more welcoming than Vincent’s room.
Mrs. Blackstone led Raelyn to sit on the bed.
“Raelyn, I didn’t know what you like, so I had someone find out about your preferences.”
“If there’s anything you’re not happy with, please tell me.”
Raelyn looked around in disbelief.
On the bedside table were gardenias, her favorite flowers.
The bookshelf was filled with textbooks from her field of study and novels she loved.
Even the bedsheets were her favorite pale yellow color.
Even Julian, who had known her the longest, probably couldn’t have said what color she liked or what fruit she enjoyed eating.
“All this was prepared for me?”
“Of course, silly child.” Mrs. Blackstone patted her shoulder. “When Grandpa Blackstone said he would treat you like his granddaughter, he wasn’t just saying empty words. He never promises anything he can’t deliver.”
“Actually, I’m quite grateful that it’s you marrying into our family, not Skylar.”
Raelyn froze for a moment: “Why?”
In all her years, this was the first time someone had said she was better than Skylar.
At the mention of Skylar, Mrs. Blackstone’s smile faded.
“Actually, this isn’t the first time I’ve approached Skylar about marriage.”
“Before Vincent’s accident, your parents came to us, hoping to arrange a marriage between the two children.”
“I’d heard their eldest daughter was an excellent student and modest, so I arranged a meeting, but to my surprise, they brought their undisciplined younger daughter instead.”
Chapter 12
“We knew Skylar frequented nightclubs and participated in street racing. We had no intention of forming a marriage alliance with her.”
“Later, when Vincent was seriously injured, I approached the Winters family with the slim hope they might reconsider. They changed their tune completely. Though I don’t know how they eventually agreed, after this incident, I have absolutely no good impression of Skylar.”
Raelyn lowered her eyes.
Skylar had agreed to spite Knox.
Mrs. Blackstone didn’t know these details, but Raelyn had experienced it firsthand.
Mrs. Blackstone took her hand.
“Raelyn, if Skylar had married into our family, I would have just given her money to send her away. I wouldn’t have prepared all these things.”
“Even if in the future, you and Vincent don’t develop romantic feelings, I still hope you’ll call me ‘Mom’ and call Vincent ‘Brother.””
Raelyn’s eyes reddened.
She tried to open her mouth, but couldn’t form a single word.
The sound of “Mom” was too unfamiliar to her.
She had wanted to cling to her birth mother, to make up for all those years of calling her “Mom,” but no one had given her that chance.
“There’s no rush,” Mrs. Blackstone smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “I’ll wait for you. I believe in the connection between us.”
After Mrs. Blackstone left, Raelyn lay on the bed.
Her mind involuntarily drifted to Knox, wondering how the man who had deceived her was doing, and if he had revealed his true identity to Skylar yet.
Then suddenly, the look in Vincent’s eyes when he first saw her flashed before her, chasing away the memory of Knox. That look? How strange, it didn’t seem like the gaze of a stranger. Had Vincent seen her before?
