Chapter 5
I pressed my lips together, knowing the secret was out. I opened the Facebook post and handed her my phone.
Morgan was still updating:
[The nerve of some people, using his parents to trick me.]
[Yeah right! I confess my feelings and suddenly his dad is dying? Give me a break!]
[These desperate childhood friends will literally make up anything to steal someone’s man] […now she’s got my crush’s friend blowing up my phone too, shit head!]
Jackson’s mom erupted in anger.
“Who is this little skank?! Is she the reason Jackson lied about having an emergency?!”
My mom pulled me aside, smacking my arm hard and lowering her voice.
“Why didn’t you say something earlier? If Jackson’s dad pulls through, whatever, but if something happens… this is gonna be a whole
mess!”
All my suppressed hurt and frustration suddenly transformed into tears.
“Blame HIM for thinking with the wrong head!”
“If I hadn’t accidentally seen that post, who would have known he had another ‘soulmate’ out there?
“If he hadn’t allowed it, would that girl dare to turn off his phone? Doesn’t he know the rule about keeping his phone on?”
I spoke loudly, and my mom awkwardly glanced back at Jackson’s mom.
Jackson’s mom had clearly heard me.
But she just agreed in despair: “Ava’s right. Jackson has completely lost his mind over this girl!”
My mom secretly sighed in relief.
She pushed me gently and went to help Jackson’s mom into a chair.
“Don’t worry, the doctors are doing everything they can for your husband.”
“As for Jackson, don’t jump to conclusions. He’s just a kid…”

“He’s NINETEEN!” Jackson’s mom suddenly burst into tears. “I knew something was off with him.”

“As soon as finals were over, he was always on the phone in secret. When I asked who he was talking to, he’d get irritated.”
“I thought once he started college with Ava looking out for each other, there wouldn’t be other temptations. But I never imagined he’d skip a dinner both families had planned for ages.”
“Now with his father in such serious condition, I can’t even find him!”
My mom’s words caught in her throat, her expression turning sour.
Just then, my phone vibrated again.
Chapter S
Jackson’s friend sounded frantic on the other end.
“Ava, Morgan won’t let Jackson take any calls.”
“Don’t panic. I’m getting some guys together to find him right now!”
With that, he quickly hung up and I went back to that Facebook post.
By now, more and more people were questioning her:
[With something like a car accident, better safe than sorry, right?]
[Girls, check my profile’s top post. I just passed Riverside Drive and there definitely was an accident. They pulled two families out of cars, including a young girl.]
[Holy shit, is this for real!?]
[I checked-the accident location is in the same district as the poster. I’ve got a bad feeling about this…]
Perhaps because the drama was so intense, comments on the post multiplied rapidly.
[Does anyone remember the childhood friend’s username? I noticed her comments have disappeared.]
Seeing this, I quickly took screenshots of Morgan’s profile, along with photos of the blood on my clothes and the lit operating room sign.
I posted on my own page:
[URGENT! Can anyone contact this poster? Comment on her post that her crush’s father is fighting for his life and he needs to come to the hospital NOW!]
