Chapter 8 Calling Off the Engagement
With that, I hightailed it out of there.
I looked cool and collected on the outside, but on the inside, I was a total mess.
I hoped that hot guy didn’t see through my act and wouldn’t come looking for me. I wanted to keep our paths separate and pretend like nothing ever happened!
As I hurried back to the car, I complained about Kailee for not stopping me from acting out after drinking. At the same time, I couldn’t help but feel a bit wistful.
I had saved myself for five years for Jayvon, only to end up with a total stranger.
It was too late to regret now. When I closed the car door, my phone in my pocket started buzzing.
It was a text from Jayvon.
“Bree, can you stop making a fuss? We were playing a game last night. There has never been anything between Jas- lene and me.
“You’re an adult now. You’re not gonna dwell on something this small, are you? Come on, we’re getting engaged at the end of the month. I’ve reached out to Karina from Aeloria to design our engagement ring. Let’s go see her this af-
ternoon.”
Even at this point, Jayvon’s apology still felt insincere.
It was almost eleven, and the sun was high up. Since I left last night, he hadn’t said anything more than those few words he sent.
He probably thought I wouldn’t call off the engagement, which was why he was so sure of himself.
I used to think he was busy, but seeing how he acted around Jaslene made me change my mind.
He’d drop everything and rush over when she called, but he never did that for me.
I felt a pang of pain in my chest. I hated myself for being so blind and wasting almost five years on him!
Without thinking twice, I called Jayvon.
I didn’t know what he was doing on his end, but it took a while for him to pick up. When he finally did, his familiar voice came through the phone, sounding a bit cheerful.
“Bree, you forgave me, right? I knew you’d get it. Where are you? I’ll come right now, and we can talk about the ring. How about that?”
“Jayvon, I told you, we’re done. I want to call off our engagement. Are you gonna tell your grandpa yourself, or do I

have to go there and do it? You pick.”
I thought about our past and didn’t want to make things too awkward for Jayvon. If he were willing to break it off peacefully and cancel the engagement himself, we could part ways nicely.
But he wouldn’t take the hint.
When he heard what I said, his happy tone suddenly got icy. He snapped, “You really wanna call off the engagement? Bree, stop being so unreasonable, will you? Jaslene is my cousin. Do you have to be so pushy?”
“Cousin, huh? So you guys could kiss and get that close?” I said coldly, my hands shaking with anger.
Jayvon didn’t expect me to be so stubborn. I used to be easy to placate. He got more and more annoyed. “Why are you being such a baby now? The invitations are already out. Calling off the engagement would make us the laughingstock of the whole city. It would embarrass both our families!
“Besides, how do you think Jaslene would feel if you cancel for such a silly reason?”
Even now, he was still worried about Jaslene!
I gave a bitter laugh. He was really loyal to Jaslene, but it made me feel sick. “Who cares what she thinks? You’re the one who messed up, and you’re gonna be embarrassed, not me! Listen up. I’m calling off the engagement!”
