Chapter 4
After that, Eve’s name kept popping up. When she improved at work, Chad wouldn’t shut up about it-“That girl’s a quick study, real hard worker.” []
He talked about her like a mentor, so I didn’t sweat it. [
Then one night, Eve showed up with a very drunk Chad. []
The way she looked at him–all heart eyes–and how she bossed me around: []
“Make him honey water,”
“Help him change.” I
For a second, I forgot who his wife was. []
That’s when the bad vibes started. [
told myself I was overreacting. Chad had too much integrity to hook up with his secretary. []
But on my mom’s birthday, we were supposed to go together.
He got a call, said some big shot from Star City was in town, had to schmooze.
He didn’t come home by midnight. I called, and Eve answered. []
“Mr. Jenkins is wasted, crashing at a hotel.” [
I asked for the address–she clammed up and hung up. I stayed up all night. [
Next morning, he came home to change. We exploded at each other, and I made him fire Eve. But yesterday, I caught him texting her again–and that’s when the fight started.
Now I’m stuck: is he really amnesiac, or just over me? |
Vance hands me two cherry pies. [
“Joanna, since when do you doubt Chad’s character? In all these years, has he ever cheated? When you guys broke up in college, girls threw themselves at him–he showed up at your dorm at dawn with breakfast, begging to get back together. Dude’s so whipped for you, I’d believe pigs fly before he cheats. Right?”
I bite my lip.
“He really lost his memory? You absolutely sure?” []
“Total temporary amnesia,” Vance nods fast. “His brain’s still swelling a little bit. Once that disappears, boom–good old Chad comes back.” [
“Then why does he remember Eve Lowe?” ||
“He’s probably mixing her up with you! Memory’s all jumbled.” [
I glare. “We don’t look anything alike. Or act alike.”
Vance sucks up: “That secretary’s cute, but you’re a knockout. She just knows how to play nice.” [
“Did you tell him I’m his wife?”
“Yep.” He makes a embarrassed face. “But you know Chad–stubborn as a mule. He won’t listen to you, and he sure as hell won’t listen to me. Mention your name, and he goes ballistic. Gotta baby his feelings, he’s a patient.” [
I stare at the pies, heavy in my hands–just like my gut. Don’t know what to do.

Chapter 4
Vance keeps going: “Joanna, you two’ve been butting heads lately. He once told me he wishes you’d baby him sometimes. Maybe his subconscious is acting up? Like, he wants you to… I dunno, sweet – talk him now.” [
Sweet talk him? I freeze. Every fight we’ve had, he’s the one who made up… [
“Don’t sweat it,” Vance says. “As a doc, I promise his memory’ll return. That secretary’s just a fling while he’s confused. Once he’s back, she’s history.” [
Will he really remember? How do I make him? []
Vance says our fights left a bad taste, that he wants me to soften up. I don’t even know how.
Eve cooks for him, so I decide to try. My mom never let me do chores-“Hardworking women get stuck doing everything,” she’d say.
Chad’s always been the chef in our relationship.
I spend the morning following YouTube recipes, pack the so–so food in a container, and head to the hospital. []
But when I push open the door, my brain short–circuits.
There they are, wrapped around each other on the bed, making out like teenagers.]
